Last week, Google announced the new version of its operating system with Android N at their I/O Developers Conference. Right now, a lot of Android devices have the most recent version available for OTA (Over The Air) download with Android M (also known as Version 6.0 or Marshmallow), but what about Sony? This is the latest news about Android M Version 6.0 Marshmallow and Android N Release Date for Sony Xperia Z5, Z4, Z3, and Z2 on Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T, US Cellular, and Verizon.
According to Android Pit, Sony usually lags behind the other manufacturers when pushing out updates. This would explain the lack of information when it comes to the release date of Android M on Sony devices.
We know for a fact that Sony has announced that the Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact, Xperia Z5 Premium, Xperia Z4 Tablet, Xperia Z3+, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia M5, Xperia C5 Ultra, Xperia M4 Aqua and Xperia C4 are all in line to receive the Marshmallow upgrade, according to Trusted Reviews.
One would think that the Z5 series, the company's current flagship, which includes the Z5, Z5 Compact, and the Z5 Premium, would have Android M by now. There are reports that it was released internationally, and that some countries in Europe already have it. Most of the recent reports from Android Authority state that this rollout out took place Internationally at the end of March, quite a while ago. There is a report saying that Sony will continue an Xperia Marshmallow beta preview into the summer, but that seems very late as newer devices from Samsung, HTC, Motorola, and LG already have Marshmallow on board.
Mixed with this are reports that the Xperia Z3 and Z2 series from two years ago are getting the upgrade, and this is not a beta version. These reports are from Tech Radar, and they match reports from tech websites about the vagueness of Marshmallow on Sony with its release date.
At this point, the best advice one can give a Sony user of a newer device in the United States, is to see if you can't get the OTA download now. Just go into the "Settings" and "System Update" to see if the upgrade is available. The upgrade may not be available depending on your carrier like T-Mobile, Sprint, US Cellular, AT&T, and Verizon. As for when Android N is coming out for Sony products, should we even be talking about that? With the sluggishness of Android M rolling out to Sony, it could be quite a while before any Sony product will have it. At this point, Sony's newest flagship will just have Android M out of the box.
