Last week's Comic-Con at San Diego was a chance for both Warner Brothers and DC Comics to show off another trailer for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. The trailer has made its rounds on the Internet and social media, and this is what has been derived from the Batman v. Superman film with a 2016 release date, as well as related news.
The film apparently picks up where Man of Steel left off, with a scene where Superman (Henry Cavill) appears in a courtroom, and he is being told by a US Senator (Holly Hunter) that he will be held responsible for all those that have died after the battle with General Zod that leveled the city. Mixed in with this plotline is footage of Bruce Wayne/Batman (Ben Affleck) at the battle himself, and then establishing his reputation as a masked vigilante.
There is footage of Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) talking with the US Senator, warning that Superman has the potential to destroy the world. It is pretty apparent that the film will climax with Superman fighting Batman in a scene that looks straight out of Frank Miller's classic comic The Dark Knight Returns.
It is interesting to see a lot of elements from the comic books incorporated into this film, and it looks like there is a lot going on. It would appear that the Batman is going to be a definite departure from the one introduced in the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy. In fact, it looks like there is going to be some interesting developments on that front, as there is a quick shot of a Robin suit with graffiti written on it. It is possible that this version of Batman had a Robin that was killed, which was a big event in the Batman comic when Jason Todd's Robin was killed by the Joker. It looks like there is a scene where we see Bruce Wayne's parents being killed, which is crucial to Batman's origin.
Wonder Woman shows up on the trailer, played by Gal Gadot. The official imdb page sites other famous DC characters scheduled to make an appearance such as Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and The Flash (Ezra Miller), but they do not appear in the trailer. There are also non-super characters appearing in this film, as Diane Lane will reprise her role of Martha Kent, Superman's adoptive mother, and Amy Adams will also be back playing Lois Lane. New to this franchise will be Jeremy Irons, playing Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred.
There is a quick shot of Lex Luthor (who is not bald) in front of a green rock, which is probably supposed to be Kryptonite, Superman's only weakness. If Batman and Lex Luthor are going to be working together to take the Man of Steel down, then you can believe that this Kryptonite will be a part of it. It would appear that Batman has a new steel outfit for this combat, but the Batmobile gets torn up in the process.
Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice will be hitting theaters next year on March 24 in Australia and March 25 in the UK and US. There is also news that Ben Affleck will be the caped crusader again in a new solo Batman film, but there is no sign of a release date on that one.
