In 1982, theater-goers were given a glimpse into a neo-noir future of Blade Runner, a loose adaptation of the novel Do Androids Dream Electric Sheep by the late Philip K. Dick, who died before he could see his novel become a classic on the big screen.   After almost 35 years, Blade Runner will finally have a sequel , and it will have Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling.  This is what is known about Blade Runner 2, Release Date, Rumors, and News.

CNET reports that Blade Runner 2 will have Ford reprise his role as the android-hunting Rick Deckard.  Beyond that, very little is known about what Blade Runner 2 will be about.  It isn't like the original book had a sequel to adapt, but the imdb page reveals that Ryan Gosling is attached to the film, directed by Denis Villeneuve of recent Sicario fame.

For those have not seen the first film, it is definitely a cult classic.  In the film, Rick Deckard is a blade runner who has a job of "retiring" (essentially killing) artificial people known as Replicants.  He is working a case with four replicant fugitives, and falls in love with a replicant himself.

There is a subtext that Deckard himself could be a replicant, but this is never really stated outright within the context of the film itself.  The film has a director's cut which has a very open-ended ending, but the theatrical release had a much happier ending.

The original film, directed by Ridley Scott of the recent space film The Martian was one of the first films to really present audiences with a distinctly dark dystopian future.  Its influence can be seen on many films after it, and it is no surprise that the book's original author, Philip K. Dick, had several of his works adapted into screenplays afterwards.  Films like Total Recall and Minority Report had similar dystopian landscapes, as well as presenting characters that questioned their morality as well as their mortality.

Blade Runner 2, which is still called Untitled Blade Runner Project, is planned to hit theaters on January 12, 2018.  That is quite a big blockbuster to release in January, and the year of its release is kind of ironic.  The 1982 film is set in 2019, where mankind has perfect clones of humans as well as interstellar travel.  Not to mention that Los Angeles looks like a massively overpopulated city that stretches as far as the eye can see.  Okay, maybe Blade Runner got some parts of the future right, but the only Android Nexus series that we have now are mobile devices.
