Chinese Presenters of Lausanne III Release 'Advance Papers'

By Joshua Cheng

Next month, some 4,000 Christian leaders from 200 countries will gather in South Africa for Cape Town 2010, The Third Lausanne Congress on World Evangelization.

The presenters at Cape Town 2010 have prepared “Advance Papers” as previews of the material they plan to address in their presentations in October. These papers are being released through Lausanne Global Conversation in eight languages, including Chinese, to allow Christians and others from around the world to respond with inputs and comments.

According to Lausanne organizing committee, when the presenters speak in Cape Town this October, their presentations will be shaped by the input received through the Lausanne Global Conversation, so responding to Advance Papers is the most direct means of impacting the content of Cape Town 2010.

Two prominent Chinese Christian presenters are Dr. Carver T. Yu, president of China Graduate School of Theology (CGST) based in Hong Kong, and Dr. Patrick Fung, General Secretary of Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF) International headquartered in Singapore.

Yu’s Advance Paper titled “Truth Matters, Stand Up for Truth” has received over 9,100 views and Christians from around the world have been actively commenting and Yu responding. His presentation will be made during the Morning Plenary session on the topic “Making the Case for the Truth of Christ in a Pluralistic, Globalized World.”

Fung’s advance paper is titled “Partnering in the Body of Christ toward a New Global Equilibrium”, which will be discussed during Morning Plenary session on the topic of partnership.

For nearly four decades, the Lausanne organization has served to bring Christian leaders worldwide together to strategize on how to evangelize the world. Billy Graham convened the first Lausanne Congress in 1974 and drew some 2,700 participants from over 150 countries. From that conference came the Lausanne Covenant, an evangelical manifesto that called for active worldwide Christian evangelism. The covenant is one of the most influential documents in modern evangelical Christianity.

Cape Town 2010, also known as Lausanne III, will take place Oct 16-25 at Cape Town International Convention Center in Cape Town, South Africa.

Cape Town 2010 will mark the first time that a Lausanne conference is held in Africa. The second Lausanne Congress in 1989 was held in Manila, Philippines.
