Cleveland Cavaliers Trade Rumors: Champs to Acquire Deron Williams, D.J. Augustin as Kyrie Irving’s Backup

Since the start of the NBA regular season, it has been rumored that the Cleveland Cavaliers are on the lookout to trading for a point guard who will serve as Kyrie Irving's backup. Currently, some of the trade options that the Cavs are reportedly looking at include Deron Williams of the Dallas Mavericks and D.J. Augustin of the Orlando Magic.

As the Cavaliers have shown this season, they have a very strong lineup. However, the organization knows that it can't continue performing this way without suitable backups for its star players. Otherwise, the team would risk exposing these stars to potential injuries.

Just look at what the Cavaliers are doing with Irving. Since the season kicked off, Irving has been playing consistently without a backup. Sure, he is an effective force for Cleveland on the court but if the team doesn't about this situation soon, it could end up losing Irving this season due to an injury.

For now, the team has tried to alleviate this situation by reducing Irving's playing time to about 33 minutes per game. However, the Cavs still try to make up for this lost time by playing LeBron James almost full-time.

As a result, to improve the rotation of players, it has been rumored that the Cavaliers are on the lookout for a possible backup point guard. According to Cleveland.com, Williams and Augustin are emerging as possible candidates for a trade with the Cavaliers.

As noted by the signed, these two recently re-signed with their respective teams the Mavericks and Magic earlier this year. This means the Cavs will have to wait until Dec. 15 of this year before they could make a trade.

Although it is not yet clear if Cleveland will pursue this option, Bleacher Report noted that both Williams and Augustin are part of franchises that are struggling this season. This means there's a good chance they will request for a trade when the opportunity arrives. Since a trade will give them a chance to play for the defending NBA champions, Williams and Augustin will probably have no problems agreeing to the deal.
