The second matchup in the quarterfinals of the Copa America tournament will take place between Bolivia and Peru on Thursday, June 25.

According to Liam Apicella of Sports Mole, both Bolivia and Peru managed to beat the odds and finish as runners-up in their respective Copa America groups. The winner of this matchup will move on to the semifinals of the tournament.

"Many viewed Bolivia to simply be making up the numbers in what is the 44th edition of this competition," Apicella wrote. "Since they were beaten finalists while hosting the tournament back in 1997, La Verde had not won a single Copa match. Also, they had not won a competitive fixture away from the high altitude of their capital city La Paz in over 20 years."

Apicella added that many thought that Bolivia coach Mauricio Soria and his team would be headed home after playing in the group round. However, Bolivia managed to secure its spot in the quarterfinals after a 0-0 draw with Mexico and a 3-2 victory over Ecuador.

"That was just as well, because in their final group encounter Bolivia's frailties were exposed by hosts Chile, who romped to a 5-0 win in Santiago," Apicella wrote.

According to Apicella, Bolivia striker Marcelo Martins may have received a new "confidence boost" based on the results at the Copa America so far.

"The former Wigan Athletic man had gone over two years without finding the net at international level, but he ended that drought against Ecuador last Monday, with the relief on his face there for all to see," Apicella wrote.

As for Peru, Apicella reported that they lost 2-1 to Brazil and ended with a 0-0 draw to Colombia. However, the team earned its spot in the quarterfinals after winning 1-0 over Venezuela.

"The goal was scored by former Chelsea frontman Claudio Pizarro, who showed good composure from close range," Apicella wrote.

Apicella pointed out that Peru has previously reached the quarterfinals of the Copa America in seven of the last eight attempts. Just four years ago, they made it to the finals and left an impression; they beat Venezuela 4-1 to secure third place.

"It was Peru's best showing at the tournament since they were crowned champions back in 1975," Apicella wrote.

Based on previous encounters, Apicella thought "this clash could well go all the way through extra time and to penalties." That's because all four matchups between Bolivia and Peru have ended in draws since September 2011.

"However, overall the bragging rights belong to Peru, who have beaten their Bolivian counterparts on 22 occasions while tasting defeat 13 times," Apicella wrote.

Based on his analysis, Apicella predicted that Peru would win Thursday's game.

"[Bolivia] shipped more goals in the group stages than any other country, and that leakiness could end up being their downfall in this quarterfinal," Apicella wrote. "Peru have plenty of attacking talent and providing that they are on form, they should have enough to win through."
