Despite Tony Romo's serious back injury, the Dallas Cowboys seem to be doing well thanks to backup quarterback Dak Prescott. However, since the organization is still not too keen on making Prescott its permanent starting quarterback, the Cowboys could engage in a trade negotiation with another team, such as the Denver Broncos for Trevor Siemian.
When the 2015 season ended, the Broncos were faced with a huge problem, even though they just won the Super Bowl. That's because after winning the title, their starting QB, Peyton Manning, announced his retirement. Then, Brock Osweiler, who was supposed to be his successor, decided to leave the team and sign with the Houston Texans.
In a mad scramble to get a new quality quarterback, the Broncos drafted Paxton Lynch and signed Mark Sanchez. However, through internal competitions, the team soon realized that none of them had what it takes to be the team's new starting quarterback. Fortunately, though, Siemian, a 2015 draft pick, was able to prove that he can play as the team's main passer.
Under the leadership of Siemian, the Broncos have been enjoying a three-game winning streak in the 2016 NFL season. And, because of his performance, a lot of teams have been eyeing Siemian for their own squads.
One of the teams that would greatly benefit from signing Siemian are the Cowboys. The Dallas franchise started the season in a very rough way after losing Romo during a preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. Due to his back injury, Romo is expected to miss up to 10 weeks this season.
Playing in his place since the regular season kicked off is Prescott, who seems to be doing a pretty good job in keeping Dallas afloat. Sure, the team suffered its first loss at Week 1 but after that, Prescott was able to gain his pace to lead the team to two consecutive victories.
However, as noted by Cowboys executive Stephen Jones, Romo will still be the team's starter once he gets back.
"The plan is to go back to Tony," he said. "You like these kinds of ‘problems.' But if he's healthy, it's Tony's team."
However, given the seriousness of Romo's injury, he might not be able to return to top playing condition. As a result, the Cowboys could turn to a backup plan by getting a new quarterback for their lineup.
Siemian will make a great addition to the team given his experience. Although he is still a rookie, he has shown that he has what it takes to win games. But then again, given his performance with the Broncos, Denver would most likely ask for a very steep price in exchange for Siemian.
