Kansas City looks forward to the chance to tie with Denver for first place with their stellar defense, while the Broncos hope to extend their AFC West lead with their elite offense. Denver quarterback Peyton Manning told Nicki Jhabvala of The Denver Post that he aims to keep the gameplay strategy simple, in reference to his teams' winning performance against the Miami Dolphins on Week 12.
"I think you're just looking for production as an offense every single week," Manning said Wednesday. "Executing the plays that are being called or being audibled to. Our execution was good last Sunday and we're looking for that kind of execution every single week."
The Associated Press reports that the Broncos have been plagued by the lack of a consistent running game while on the road. Manning and his team think a more well-rounded attack would be the key to victory against the Chiefs.
"I think this team has good flexibility, and I think that's important," Manning said. "For a player to be able to move to a different spot, to be able to run different types of plays and different types of formations and win games different types of ways, I think that's important for any team. And I feel this team can do that."
Denver ranks 29th with 72.6 rushing yards per game on the road, where it is 2-3 - one loss shy of its total from the last two seasons, according to the Associated Press.
As for the Chiefs, a victory against the Broncos will help them pull even. Andrew Dill of Fansided reports that Kansas City will have to do that without All-Pro safety Eric Berry, who has been sidelined to a non-football illness list after team doctors discovered a mass on the right side of his chest, thinking it might be lymphoma.
"I understand that right now I have to concentrate on a new opponent," Berry said. "I have great confidence in the doctors and the plan they are going to put in place for me to win this fight. I believe that I am in God's hands and I have great peace in that."
Dill noted that the Chiefs are coming off Week 12's loss against the Oakland Raiders, which clenched their first win of the season. However, he also admitted that Kansas City has a phenomenal defense which could stop the Broncos in their tracks.
"The Chiefs are first in the NFL at defending the pass, allowing just 198.9 yards through the air," Dill wrote. "Kansas City doesn't have many eye-popping names in their secondary but their front-four (Mike DeVito, Dee Ford, Tamba Hali, and Justin Houston) are good at putting the pressure on the quarterback."
That defense from Kansas City is making Denver coach John Fox definitely feel the pressure to pull off a victory.
"We're a performance-based business and regardless of what your job description is you're expected to perform," Fox said.
