While San Diego struggles to stay alive in the AFC playoff picture, Denver is looking forward to winning another AFC West championship, which would be its fourth straight division title. According to Anthony Riccobono of International Business Times, no NFL team has clinched a division title in the 2014 season so far.
"Denver has attained a two-game lead by playing nearly perfect in their divisional games," Riccobono wrote. "They are 4-0 against AFC West teams, winning by an average of 14.5 points per game, including a 35-21 win over San Diego in Week 8."
Riccobono added that the Chargers failed to answer to Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, who has thrown for 286 yards and has a 124.2 passer rating. In addition, the Associated Press reports that Denver has capitalized on their red-zone possessions; the team had eight touchdowns on 19 red-zone opportunities over the previous four games.
"Those are hard-earned runs down there," Manning said. "It was good to improve our red zone (efficiency)."
The Associated Press reported that in terms of passing attack, Manning ranked third in the league with 8.1 yards per attempt in his first 10 games, but ranked 22nd in the NFL over his last three at 6.8 yards. However, Broncos coach John Fox still has confidence in his quarterback.
"Let me just say that I can't think of another quarterback that I'd rather have than Peyton Manning," Fox said. "We remind everybody that whether it's two weeks, three weeks, at the end of the day we're not done with our body of work yet. We're just trying to win games. We've been blessed to win three in a row."
Fox added that his team will "lean on whatever we have to lean on" and try "to be efficient."
As for the Chargers, Riccobono mentioned that their best chance to make the postseason remains in the wild-card race, despite the fact San Diego is 2-2 in the AFC West. He thought that the Chargers would have to pull something big from quarterback Philip Rivers.
"San Diego will likely need another big performance from their starter," Riccobono wrote in regards to Rivers. "The quarterback has posted six triple-digit passer ratings this season, all of which have resulted in wins for the Chargers."
Although San Diego lost at home to New England 23-14 last week, Rivers explained why they're not shaken by the loss.
"I think it's our veteran leaders and then we have a lot of young guys who are eager to follow," Rivers said. "We fight and care for one another, and love one another. We're going to rebound and bounce back, and play like crazy (Sunday)."
Although the Associated Press reported that Denver has won four of five games in San Diego, Riccobono thought that San Diego does have a chance against them.
"The Broncos are just 3-3 on the road, and they've lost by an average of 14.3 points in their defeats," Riccobono wrote.
