Former Virginia Tech star quarterback Logan Thomas has been signed by the Detroit Lions to their practice squad. But, instead of holding on to his usual quarterback post, he will not be playing tight end for the team.

Thomas first broke out as a football player during his time as a starting quarterback at Virginia Tech in 2011. Due to his talent, a lot of people predicted him to be a first-round pick at the NFL draft. However, this didn't exactly happen after he dropped as a fourth-round pick for the Arizona Cardinals in 2014.

During his rookie year with the team, he was able to debut at Week after Drew Stanton suffered an injury. Although he did fairly well during that game, his performance dipped during the following weeks. As a result, he was released by the Cardinals in 2015.

Following his stint with Arizona, he was claimed by the Miami Dolphins. But, like his time with the Cardinals, his career with the Dolphins also didn't last long. After getting waived in June this year, he was claimed by the New York Giants.

After a couple of months of coming on and off the Giants' practice squad, the Lions signed him.

However, unlike the other teams, the Detroit franchise didn't claim Thomas to be a backup quarterback. Instead, he was signed to the team's practice squad as a tight end. To make room for Thomas, the Lions released linebacker Brandon Chubb.

As Yahoo! Sports pointed out, Thomas has the size to be an effective tight end for the Lions. At 250 pounds, he will probably do fairly well in blocking for the offensive line.

However, Thomas will probably have to wait on the practice squad for a couple of weeks or months before seeing any action on a regular season game.
Right now, the tight end bench of the Lions is looking pretty full with all three players Eric Ebron, Clay Harbor and Matthew Mulligan being active. As for the inactives, these include Khari Lee and Brandon Pettigrew, who is currently on the unable to perform list, according to Detroit News.
