The world welcomed 2014 with a series of spectacular firework displays to celebrate the New Year. Europe joined in the party with a giant salvo in London, after Dubai attempted to break the world record for the largest fireworks show ever.

The 6-minute spectacular show featured 500,000 pyrotechnics from 400 firing locations of the Dubai shoreline. That's 62 miles (100 kilometers) of waterfront lighting up.

The city's coastline was lit up with a flying falcon made out of fireworks that moved across a massive man-made palm-shaped island alongside a countdown in fireworks.

The backdrop to the extravaganza was the world's tallest skyscraper, the 828-meter high Burj Khalifa.

The Guinness World Records staff later labeled it the largest ever. The show blew Kuwait's world record out of the water when last year it set off 77,000 fireworks over 64 minutes.
