Much has happened on Seasons 1 and 2 of Elementary, the modern-day take of Holmes and Watson (not be confused with the BBC series Sherlock). It is about to take several journeys into mystery with Season 3.
At the end of Season 2, Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) was ready to work with MI6, and it shouldn't come as a shock that MI6 fired him and he ended up back in New York, about one year later. Sherlock assumed that he could pick up where he left off, but this was not the case. What is interesting is how Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) is essentially a consultant for NYPD, along with a roster of private clients. It appears that Holmes has to play second fiddle, and he will not like that at all.
Naturally, Holmes has a new protégé, Kitty, who is actually from a Victorian Sherlock Holmes story called "The Adventure of the Illustrious Client". Kitty's role in that story was small, but she will easily create a stir of tension this season between her, Holmes, and Watson. Like her literal inspiration, Kitty has had traumatic things happen in her past, and this will make her a different type of partner for Sherlock than Joan.
Romantic tension is definitely going to be the focus of Elementary now that Joan Watson has a new man in her life. Jonny Lee Miller has opened up to Entertainment Weekly that the tension between Sherlock and Joan's beau will come to a head soon.
Speaking of romantic drama, it has been revealed that Christian Camargo will soon show up on Elementary as Joan Watson's ex. Christian Camargo has quite an acting career, but is most famous for playing Dexter's long-lost brother and the Ice Truck Killer Brian Moser on Dexter. How will his presence affect Holmes and Watson's relationship? Not to mention the new relational thread added with Kitty.
Of course, there is the heroin subplot, which could easily rear its ugly head in this season. Heroin addiction was one of Holmes' vices from the Victorian era, and there was a brief shot of Holmes taking heroin at the end of Season 2.
One of the biggest speculations is whether Sherlock's brother Mycroft will make some kind of dramatic return. Considering that he faked his own death in order to hide under NSA protective custody, this doesn't seem very likely.
Another speculation is that Sherlock actually has a reason for returning to New York besides just being laid off from MI6. Like there is some big plot that he is trying to solve, or something of that nature. Perhaps he is undercover with MI6?
If you want to get into Elementary, catch it on Thursdays 10/9c on CBS. Also, go to the CBS website and get caught up with the Season 3 episodes that they have ready to watch.
