After taking on the role of an iconic character in the ‘Star Wars’ franchise, actor Ewan McGregor has opened up about not understanding the craze behind the worldwide hit saga.
McGregor played Obi-Wan Kenobi, a legendary Jedi Master, in the Star Wars prequels, namely ‘Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace,’ ‘Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones’ and ‘Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith.’
In an interview with Parade, McGregor discussed his appreciation of the franchise’s movies and his involvement in such projects, but admitted how he cannot completely take in the fans’ obsession over the epic space saga.
"I like the films that I made with George Lucas and I'm happy to be part of the legend of it all, but that's it with me. I don't really understand the fanaticism about it,” the 45-year-old actor shared.
Nonetheless, when responding to the question whether he would make a comeback in the sequels, McGregor replied that he would “be happy to.”
“I'm asked by everybody all the time, 'Would you do another one?' and I've said, 'Yeah, I'd be happy to', because I think there's a film between Episode III and Episode IV, which is when Alec Guinness is in the desert,” he further explained.
The Perth native also touched on the issue of him being asked by fans about doing a new ‘Star Wars’ film and the actor being deemed to have been requesting Disney to come up with an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie.
“I've been asked about it so much now that I'm being criticized for trying to persuade Disney to make this movie!,” McGregor shared. “I only responded to people asking me about it, and now it looks like I'm sort of looking for work, which is humiliating."
The father-of-four is currently filming ‘Trainspotting 2,’ a sequel to the award-winning British dark comedy film, ‘Trainspotting.’ New photos have emerged from the set of the Danny Boyle-helmed movie, showing McGregor and co-star Jonny Lee Miller being involved in a dramatic dash through the streets.
‘Trainspotting 2’ is currently set for a premiere on Jan. 27 in the United Kingdom. The sequel will be released in the United States in select theaters on Feb. 3 and is set for a worldwide release on Feb. 10, as reported by Variety.
McGregor is also set to take on the role of twin brothers in ‘Fargo’ season three; the two-time Golden Globe nominee is the first actor to have been cast on the new season of the FX dark comedy crime drama series.
As for his role on the upcoming ‘Beauty and the Beast’ remake, McGregor is set to play Lumiere alongside a star-studded cast that includes Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Josh Gad, Luke Evans, Emma Thompson, Ian McKellen and Stanley Tucci, to name a few.
‘Beauty and the Beast’ will hit cinemas on May 17, 2017, more than three months after the worldwide premiere of ‘Trainspotting 2.’
