Whenever Android upgrades to a new version, the next thing to come is a new version of the Google Nexus phone. It is possible that with the release of Android M will come a very soon, if not immediate, release of the new Nexus phone. It isn't known what the new number will be, if it will be a new Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9, but most suspect that it will be a 2015 edition Nexus 5. According to Boy Genius Report, the new Nexus phone might be launching sooner rather than later. For the most part, the newest Nexus phone usually does not come out until the fourth quarter of the year, but it appears that the news Nexus phone could come out with Android M.
Android M, for those of you who don't know, is the latest version of Android that was unveiled at the Google I/O Developers Conference this year. Android M is expected to come out sometime in the third quarter, which would mean that the new Google Nexus phone could be making an appearance then.
Know Your Mobile has a report showing what the next-gen Nexus 5 will look like thanks to a leaked promotional image. The handset looks like a thin Nexus 7 tablet in terms of form factor and design with a matte back panel. It could have a 5 inch screen, which would make it essentially a reboot of the Nexus 5.
According to PC Advisor, the new Nexus phone is going to be another Nexus 5, made by Huawei. This means that Google is going back to its high-end specs, mid-range price business model. Also, since Huawei is a Chinese phone maker, this could be the Nexus phone with dual-SIM capability. Whether or not this would be the Nexus 5, Nexus 5 2nd Gen, Nexus 5S, or some other naming scheme is anyone's guess. Keep in mind that the company has reused names before with the Nexus 7.
For those that don't know of the history of the Nexus series, the Nexus 4 was released in 2012, and was the first to use JellyBean. The Nexus 5 was released in 2013, and was the first to use KitKat. The Nexus 6 was released in Fall of 2014, and the first to run Lollipop. As stated before, this new Nexus phone will be the first phone to run Android M (possibly version 5.2), the definite latest Android operating system that was unveiled during last month's Google I/O. The reason why a lot have been expecting the Android M poster device will be a Nexus 5 is it has been the most successful Nexus handset to date, according to Expert Reviews.
The rumors specs will be a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, specifically 64-bits and the same 6-core Snapdragon 808 that is in the LG G4. There is no confirmation on the size of the display, but a 5.5 inch one uses a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution. Granted, these are estimates made from LG specs, and it won't be known what will be in there if Huawei has the manufacturing rights.
As for the release date, this one is pretty easy to predict. All of the last four Nexus-branded smartphones have all been announced and launched in late October or early November, with the chance of Android M coming out at the exact same time. Whatever the Nexus 2015 version will be, it should follow that exact same pattern. As far as the price goes, Google might we wanting to hit a low mark to compete with other Android (not to mention Apple) smartphones on the market, so it could drop to the below £300 mark.
