The Japanese automaker has claimed that certain Acura and Honda vehicles from 2005-2016 are being recalled in order to replace the Takata PSDI-5 driver-side inflators, which adds 2.23 million vehicles. Autoblog reports that the problem is that several vehicles carry the Takata PSDI-5 airbag inflator on the driver's side, and this part could rupture if the airbag deploys. So far, there have been no reported ruptures of the PSDI-5 inflator in Honda or Acura vehicles, but Takata's exploding components have links to at least 10 deaths worldwide because they can spray shrapnel at occupants. Takata Corp told U.S. safety regulators two weeks ago that about 3.9 million PDSI-5 inflators sold to several different vehicle manufacturers could rupture and kill.
If you own one of the vehicles that made the list, then Honda and Acura dealers will replace the inflators with parts from an alternative supplier at no cost of the owners of the Honda or Acura vehicle. The repairs are scheduled to begin this summer, and owners should receive a letter notifying them about the recall within 60 days and will get a second message when parts are available. The plan is to prioritize older models in high-humidity regions first because these inflators would be the most likely to rupture.

Reuters reports that Honda recalled another 269,000 similar models in Canada on Monday for the same issue. Honda has also stated that it was recalling 341,000 Accords due to a separate issue affecting the electronic control unit used in supplemental restraint systems in 2008-2010, which could also result in airbags failing deploy.
