Ever since Longmire fans (sometimes referred to as Longmire Posse) were granted a Season 4 of the prematurely cancelled Longmire back when it was on A&E, the biggest question has remained: "when will we get a Season 5"? It looks like Netflix has announced that they will be granting these viewers what they want, but the wait has been atrocious. This is what is known about Longmire Season 5, release date and news.
A tweet from Longmire states that "we've never been one to back down from a fight. Longmire will return to Netflix for Season 5". It was very obvious that viewers loved this show, and it was their initial crying out after it was cancelled after Season 3 that prompted Netflix to try it out for a Season 4. Return viewers loved Season 4, and they were clamoring to hear from Netflix when Season 5 would be green-lit.
For months, Netflix kept Longmire viewers in the dark, and according to TV Line, they did not disclose viewership numbers for Season 4 of Longmire. Obviously, those numbers must have been good to green light a Season 5, but it is clear that this series has more life in it than just one more season. In fact, it has been reported that the showrunners have a mind for ten seasons.
For those that are not familiar with the series, it follows the adventures of Wyoming Sheriff Walt Longmire, who is played by Robert Taylor. The series is based on a series of novels by Craig Johnson, and also stars Lou Diamond Phillips, Katee Sackhoff, Bailey Chase, Cassidy Freeman, and Adam Bartley.
The reason the show was cancelled on A&E was based on the show "not being able to find its audience". Apparently, this audience found it, loved it, and fought to have it be put back on the air. Having Netflix air it with the intention that the entire season would be available upon arrival is a change from network TV.
Longmire is truly a case of what television of today is like, and how networks are going to need to have their ears tuned into what the people want to see. Considering that so many wanted this show back on the air, and then was finally granted it, shows that someone in television has listened.
Still, that next step has to be taken, as after Season 4 aired, and many were talking about it, there was no word on a Season 5. Of course, when something is a huge hit, there is a sequel being made because audiences seem to want it. In this case, the showrunners were ready for it, and it was just a matter of time before the announcement that was made today came.
Right now, very little is known of Longmire Season 5, but I'm sure that the writers are excited to begin again. It will probably have its Release Date next year around the fall, if not earlier.
