Jurassic Park definitely has left its mark on movie-making since its release over 20 years ago. Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Michael Crichton's best-selling book redefined the blockbuster movie thanks to its use of computer-generated creations that still influences speculative fiction films of today. The film spawned two sequels that were not as well-received as its first, but Spielberg is back as executive producer for Jurassic World, another chapter in Universal's film franchise.
Last week, the official trailer for Jurassic World was released, and it created quite a stir. It showed that Jurassic Park (now rebranded to Jurassic World) has been up and running for over a decade, in spite of all the clear problems in the first three films. They still have the giant doors to bring in the visitors on this dinosaur island, and business seems to be booming at a park that resembles Universal's own real-life theme park.
Unfortunately, looks can be deceiving. Fashion N Style reports that visitors to the park are getting bored, and so the scientists are trying to create a new breed of dinosaur. According to Franchise Herald, Colin Trevorrow, the director of Jurassic World, has stated that "there will be one new dinosaur" created by the park's genticists. The gaps in her sequence were filled with DNA from other species, much like the genome in the first film was completed with frog DNA. This creation exists to fulfill a corporate mandate-they want something bigger, louder, with more teeth. And that's what they get." From the trailer, it appears that this new dinosaur will stir up a lot of trouble in the tourist trap.
According the official imdb cast list, there is no sign of any of the returning characters from the original 1992 film. In their place is Chris Pratt, the funny side character actor from Parks and Recreation who has been booted into megastar status with roles in The Lego Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy. In place of the late Richard Attenborough is Bryce Dallas Howard, who is essentially being the businessman/woman who dreams of dinosaur profits while Pratt plays the Sam Neill/Jeff Goldblum role of warning him not to mess with Mother Nature.
Of course, was it not Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) who told John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) that "the kind of control he was attempting was impossible" back in 1992? It is strange that Universal would go with a premise that the park is actually running successfully, but it is also clear that Universal's movie franchise has steered away from Michael Crichton's original work. Michael Crichton passed away in 2008, and it is not known how much influence he had, if any, on this script. There is nothing mentioned on the late author's website.
Jurassic World's trailer shows that the film is coming to theaters on June 12th, promising to be one summer blockbuster. Last week was a huge week for movie trailers as the teaser for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens also created a lot of Internet buzz.
