The film Kingsman: The Secret Service, took audiences by surprise with its early 2014 release. The film introduced audiences to a world similar to that of older James Bond films, but with a much more R-Rated twist. It shouldn't come as any shock that a sequel to the film is being made, and the latest news is that Julianne Moore will be playing the villain.
Imdb reports that Matthew Vaughn, the director of the original film, will be taking the helm for the sequel, and that Taron Egerton will be back in the lead role once again. So far, very little is known about it, but the action is planned to move from London into the United States.
This actually isn't surprising, as Kingsman: The Secret Service is another film that is based on comic-book source material. The series was created by Mark Millar, who has his name on other comic books created into films like Wanted and Kick-Ass. Unlike those film series, the adaptation of The Secret Service (Kingsman was added into only the movie title) was a six-issue limited series, which means that there isn't a graphic novel series to adapt for a sequel. Therefore, if Julianne Moore is playing a villain, then it is one written for the film and not one taken from comic book source material.
Of course, it is quite possible that Mark Millar is working on a sequel to the original series, to be completed before the film starts filming. If so, then perhaps he will go with Dave Gibbons as an illustrator, a comic book artist most famous for his work on Watchmen, one of the most famous and applauded comic books of all time.
The original film also left a lot of room for a sequel, as the organization of the Kingsman could be dealing with a lot of supervillains like they dealt with Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson) in the last one. Several of the characters of the first film died, and due to Valentine's plot, a lot of the world just went mad and killed each other by the end of the first film. There is no way that society would ever "go back to normal" if something like that ever happened. This is something that really has to be addressed in the sequel.
The projected release date for Kingsman 2 (no subtitle as yet) is for June 16, 2017. Considering that it looks like the film is still in its writing phase, this could easily be cancelled. However, the success of the recent Deadpool movie has proven that there is a big market for R-Rated comic book source material movies.
