Of course, this being the day and age where just about everyone has a smartphone, you need not have to sit in front of a desktop computer or a notebook that is tethered to a power outlet on a cold New Year’s Eve night as midnight approaches. There’s an app for that as well, allowing you to enjoy the kind of crazy revelry people do in New York City’s world famous Times Square as the Ball Drop happens.

Of course, the famous Ball Drop can also be caught online at NewYearsEve.nyc. NBC will continue to play their part by hosting its traditional broadcast, kicking things off at 11:30 p.m. EST. Expect to see Alicia Keys and Blake Shelton light up the stage then. For ABC fans, Ryan Seacrest will play host to a five-and-a-half-hour-long special, beginning at 8 p.m. EST while seeing diva Mariah Carey and DNCE entertain viewers.
Right now, we do know that finishing touches are being prepared in Times Square, where the famous Ball is being worked on to sparkle while the clock ticks toward the inevitable -- 2017 arriving. So far, we do know that 281 new Waterford crystal triangles have been attached to the nearly six-ton sphere in order to make it sparkle and glitter unlike never before, thanks to having close to 2,700 triangles and 32,000 LED lights as it drops. The theme for this year’s crystals would be the gift of kindness, shown through the intertwining rosettes and diamond cuts. To date, there has been seven different versions of the ball ever since the Ball Drop tradition kicked off in 1907, making December 31st this year as the 110th anniversary. The first ball was made using iron and wood, covered with 100 light bulbs, while the current ball was installed in 2008.
