Fans, rejoice! Netflix has just announced its renewal of Longmire, a crime-drama series that's been running its Season 5 since September 23 of this year. While fans are happy, many critics find the launch of the next season too soon given that Longmire stands poorly compared to other Netflix series such as the highly acclaimed Narcos, featuring Colombia's infamous Pablo Escobar.
Longmire Season 6 will start airing from March 2017. Contrary to its Seasons 1 through 5 shot in Northern New Mexico, the 10 episodes of Season 6 will be filmed in Santa Fe, Pecos, Los Alamos, and Las Vegas. As Executive Producers Hunt Baldwin, John Coveny and Greer Shephard say in a press release, "We are grateful to Netflix for the opportunity to compose a closing chapter for these beloved characters that inspire lasting memories."
Just last month, Longmire's public relations team took their engagement to social media where they encouraged fans to "post, share, tweet, and retweet about Longmire Season 6." Fans were asked to use the hashtag "#LongmireS6" and the tag "@Netflix", when making a post about their thoughts of the series. The online event was formally launched on October 30 at 9 p.m. (EST) and ran for one hour.
The press team sent out this invitation on Twitter:

While Season 6 is on its way this spring, cast spin-offs, if any, haven't been confirmed just yet. Many have expressed that they would want to see the same cast, with Robert Taylor as Walt Longmire, Katee Sackhoff as Vic Moretti, and Lou Diamond Phillips as Henry Standing Bear.
Some speculate that this early announcement of renewal appears odd, given that Netflix is known to make only two shows a year. And given that Longmire is not on top of Netflix charts, some believe that these stories are part of the plan to give out an impression of "false excitement and attention."
Not too long ago, Longmire, which was then being aired on the A&E Network from 2012, was rejected for renewal by 2014. It was at this stage that Netflix took the role of airing the series from then on. It is then not surprising for a similar renewal backlash to happen.
For now, viewers can enjoy all 53 episodes from Longmire Seasons 1 to 5 available for streaming on Netflix.
