At Mobile World Congress at the beginning of last March, Microsoft announced two new midrange phones with the Lumia 640 and 640 XL.  These phones are about ready to hit the market, and here is what we know about the release date and features of these two new Windows mobile devices.

The Lumia 640 is a phone that is made to be affordable, yet still smart.  Smart, in the sense that it is a smartphone, but not running on iOS or Android, because it is a Windows phone.  Microsoft purchased Nokia about a year ago, and so it stands to reason that Windows would be the operating system on their branded devices.

So what does Microsoft Lumia 640 have?  According to the official site, it has a 12 month Office 365 Personal subscription and up to 30 GB of free OneDrive storage to back up and access photos and documents.  Yes, those are Microsoft services, and this is the big features highlighted.

Then there are the other features such as the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and battery with 2500 mAh.  The display is a 5-inch HD display and the rear camera is an 8 Megapixel job with an HD 0.9 Megapixel wide angle on the front.

As for the Lumia 640 XL, which has been called by PC World "a poor man's Lumia 1520 phablet", it has the same offer of 30 GB of free OneDrive.  The battery is slightly bigger at 3000 mAh, and it also features a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.  The screen is at 5.7 inches, and the cameras are larger too.  The Main rear-facing one is at 13.0 Megapixels and the front-facing one is at 5 Megapixels.

According to Digital Trends, other features that both the Lumia 640 and 640 XL have is 1 GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage (expandable via Micro SD card up to 128GB), 720 screen resolutions and dual SIM card options.

As for the release date of the Lumia 640 phone and Lumia 640 XL phablet, Windows Central states that they are available for pre-order in the Microsoft Store in the UK.  The Lumia 640 carries a pricetag of $251 US Dollars, and the Lumia 640 XL will run for $325 (also in US Dollars).  The official release date of the Lumia 640 is April 7th  with color variants of orange and black.  The Lumia 640 XL has a release date of April 28th with four color variants of white, black, cyan, and orange.

As for the carrier, we have previously reported that AT&T will be carrying both of these mobile devices.  T-Mobile will be carrying the Microsoft Lumia 640, but we have only word that it will be coming in the Spring according to the T-Mobile Press site, but both mobile devices should be available in the United States but not on Sprint or Verizon.
