Microsoft Lumia 940, 940 XL Release Date and Specs: New Windows 10 Flagship Devices May Feature 25 MP Camera

Nokia Lumia

After Microsoft acquired Nokia last year and renamed it Microsoft Mobile, the company is now set to launch some new Lumina devices, in particular two flagship-grade and two mid-range devices.

According to Kamal of NokiaPowerUser, the Lumina 940, which is one of two new Windows 10 flagship devices Microsoft plans to release, will have a 5.2 inch screen, while the other one, the Lumina 940 XL, will have a 5.7 inch screen. Both devices could also get a significant camera upgrade too in terms of megapixels.

"Lumia 940 may sport a 5.2 inch while Lumia 940 XL may have a 5.7 inch display," Kamal wrote, citing sources. "We hear that the rear camera sensor may swell to 24-25 MP from current 20 MP on Lumia 930. They will certainly feature a 5 MP or even higher MP FFC."

Kamal added that other cool features could be included in both Lumina devices, including "3D-interaction, Iris scanner and native Pen support." He also elaborated on the possible processors Microsoft could use to power the smartphones.

"We know that Windows 10 for Phones will bring support for Hexa-core and Octa-core processors," Kamal wrote. "We don't have confirmed info about processor and display resolution as of now but Microsoft may go for bleeding-edge specs."

Victor H. of PhoneArena reported that the launch of the new devices will coincide with the public release of the Windows 10 update. Microsoft hopes that this version of Windows operating system would unite all screens and devices; the smartphones will use the new Modern Live Tile interface.

"Given Microsoft's infatuation with holograms, we can't be too skeptical," Victor wrote. "But the left side of our brain also warns us that all previous attempts at 3D interaction (hey, Amazon Fire Phone!) have been a failure, often of huge proportions."

According to PhoneArena, Microsoft is also making mid-range devices to succeed the Lumina 830 and Lumia 730. Those devices could be named the Lumina 840 and Lumia 740 respectively.

"The higher-end Lumia 840 is expected to feature a 13-14-megapixel camera with PureView branding, and a 5-inch-ish display," Victor wrote. "Then, the Lumia 740 is likely to come in an XL-sized version with a large 5.5" to 5.7" screen."

Kamal added that the Lumina 840 could also include Dual-Sim support and a 5 MP FFC. However, Kamal warned that the information surrounding all of Microsoft's proposed smartphones is just preliminary for now.

"It may change later, and Microsoft may not even bring these devices to the market," Kamal wrote.
