For some time now, tech giant Microsoft has been rumored that's it's currently working on its latest premium handset. And, based on the device's name, it is expected to come with various features commonly found in its Microsoft Surface line of products.

According to various sources, the upcoming product from the company will be called the Microsoft Surface Phone. However, the idea of Microsoft working on a new smartphone at this point may seem a bit unusual since it only released the Lumia 950 XL late last year.

But, as noted by Tampa Bay Review, it seems the company is trying to redeem itself in the smartphone market by launching the Microsoft Surface Phone. After all, even though the latest Lumia was supposed to become the mobile carrier for the Windows 10 OS, it didn't achieve the success that Microsoft was hoping it would achieve.

So, to get over this minor bump, Microsoft will once again try its hand in the mobile industry by releasing a new smartphone, which in this case, is the Microsoft Surface Phone.

Based on its name, users can expect the device to come with a metal housing just like the Microsoft Surface laptops. And, similarly to its tablet line, the Microsoft Surface Phone might also feature a foldable kickstand on its rear cover. With this feature, users will be able to prop up the device on a stable surface without holding on to it.

As for its other features, Tech Times noted that the device might have three different variants with varying display sizes ranging from 5.5 to 6 inches. The smaller model, which could be the consumer variant, is expected to pack 4GB of RAM and 64GB of pace while the mid-level model might pack 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

As for the third model, which could be the premium variant, sources say it might have 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage and run on the Snapdragon 830 processor from Qualcomm. It is rumored that all three models might house a 21-megapixel rear shooter and an 8-megapixel selfie snapper.

Originally, the Microsoft Surface Phone was set to come out this month, but it seems the company has postponed its launch to early 2017 to give the Lumia devices enough time to settle in the market.
