Due to the events that happened during the 2016 NFL preseason, where teams struggled with injured quarterbacks, there have been various rumors about the return of Michael Vick. According to recent reports, he might join the Dallas Cowboys to serve as the backup of the newly acquired Mark Sanchez.

The last time Vick played in the NFL was in 2015 after signing a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. This contract expired during the offseason, making Vick a free agent.

Although Vick does not yet have a team for the upcoming season, he previously said that he still plans to play. Many sources speculated that this could be his final year with the NFL.

But, aside from his comeback, he also said that he wants to play for the Cowboys.

"Every kid gowing up wants to put that star on their helmet," he said, referring to the logo of the Dallas franchise. "You see them on Thanksgiving, on Monday night games year in and year out. It has become an annual thing. It's a beautiful uniform and it looks good."

With the Cowboys' current situation, Vick's dream of becoming a member of the Dallas team could come true. Last month, the Cowboys experienced a huge problem after losing Tony Romo to a serious injury.

Since he is expected to be out for a couple of months, or even the rest of the season, the team resorted to signing Mark Sanchez after he was released from the Denver Broncos.

Despite having the veteran quarterback on the lineup, the Cowboys' bench for quarterbacks still lack the necessary depth. With only Sanchez and Dak Prescott on it, an injury could seriously jeopardize the team's chances of heading to the finals this year.

Obviously, signing Vick would give the Cowboys the necessary depth to their roster. Sure, acquiring him would seem like a risky move due to his age and declining athleticism, especially given the quality of today's defensive lineups, but Vick still has the necessary skills and veteran status to serve as a backup to either Sanchez or Prescott.

Certainly, if he's on the Cowboys lineup, he wouldn't be the team's starter. That job will still belong to Sanchez. But, aside from serving as a mentor to Sanchez and Prescott, he could still serve as a temporary QB for Dallas just in case something happens to the team's No. 1 and No. 2 quarterbacks.
