The NFL playoffs may have only a few days left before it heats up, but the football teams still face a lot of concerns. One of the most pressing matters that came up this season is the quarterback drama. NFL teams with initially promising quarterbacks fell victim to injuries and unexpected suspensions. While battle scars in the field could never be avoided, these injuries could spell the doom for the Super Bowl dreams of the NFL teams.
One of the most heartbreaking crushed Super Bowl dreams this season is that of the Dallas Cowboys. The collarbone injury of Tony Romo had pushed the Dez Bryant squad well below the division and killed their chances of making it to the playoffs. However, it could not be said that the quarterback did not try to recover as soon as possible. In fact, Romo even risked aggravating his injury when he went back to face the Carolina Panthers earlier this season. While his valiant efforts were appreciated, the Greg Hardy squad fell to the Cam Newton team in the said football match.
With the Dallas Cowboys high on the NFL Draft rankings this year, Romo expressed his support for the future members of the NFL team. He also shared his understanding of the possibility that a quarterback might get drafted soon. He said via ESPN, "We're going to evaluate everybody and the organization is going to look at who to take, and they're going to take the best player."
Romo added, "If the best player there is a quarterback, then that's what our team needs. Our team needs good players. That's what we need. And if it's the best player at a different position I'm just obviously a player on the football team and I don't have to make those decisions, and I'm glad. My job is to go out and get better and make sure this team wins next year. And I'm going to do everything in my power to ensure that."
However, the history of the Dallas Cowboys shows an aversion to filling in the quarterback post. Throughout Jerry Jones' reign, the NFL team only recorded four instances when they drafted for the said post. These include the one 1989 for Troy Aikman, with Steve Walsh signed as a supplemental draft in the same year. The year 1991 also saw a quarterback enter the Dallas Cowboys in the form of Bill Musgrave while Quincy Carter was selected during the second round in 2001.
Given the precedent cases, the Dallas Cowboys might opt to sign a free agent for the quarterback post instead. One of the most widely speculated football star to possibly join Jones' franchise is Tim Tebow. The once Philadelphia Eagles hopeful might be the quarterback the Dallas Cowboys need to reinvigorate the squad.
Even Texas governor Gregg Abbott vouched for the idea way back when Romo first injured himself against the DeMarco Murray squad. He said via social media, "Bittersweet victory for Cowboys. Win game but lose Tony Romo. Maybe Dallas will sign Tim Tebow. #NFL."
Aside from the Dallas Cowboys, the San Francisco 49ers could also be a potential landing spot for the Christian star. Some sports analysts point out that Tebow might be a better option than Blaine Gabbert in the battle over Colin Kaepernick's spot.
"'All he does is win.' This is the phrase that Tim Tebow made famous back in 2011, when he took over as the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos and led the team to an improbable playoff victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers," noted Dan Karpuc of Fox Sports. He continued, "[T]he San Francisco 49ers should sign the 28-year-old former Heisman Trophy winner."
Citing the need of the San Francisco 49ers for a replacement of Kaepernick, Karpuc noted that Tebow can offer the NFL team the surge of energy and inspiration for the next season.
He shared, "[T]he 49ers are in need of a revitalizing boost. They're clearly in rebuilding mode and should tank for a top pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. Why not give your fans something to cheer for, fill your seats every week moving forward, and give Tebow the chance he has been hoping for after the 2011 season in which he took the entire league by storm?"
At the moment, no official confirmation has been given on Tebow's prospects. The Philadelphia Eagles have also been earlier reported to might want the aspiring quarterback back in their roster. This could be a viable move especially with the departure of Chip Kelly. However, there remains no guarantee on where Tebow will land next.
