Despite the fact the Chiefs have lost three games in a row, they are still alive in the AFC playoff hunt. According to the Associated Press, Kansas City had won five straight before falling to Oakland 24-20 in Week 12 as the Raiders snapped a 16-game losing streak.
"We've just got to play better team defense as a whole," Chiefs defensive tackle Dontari Poe said. "Everybody has to fit their gaps, contain the edge and stuff like that. It's not specific. We've just got to come to play."
Chiefs coach Andy Reid commented on how Kansas City could enhance its gameplay on the gridiron. The Associated Press reported that the Chiefs lost to the Denver Broncos 29-16 on Week 13 and fell to the Arizona Cardinals 17-14 last Sunday.
"We obviously need to do a better job, take care of our business. It's my responsibility that takes place," Reid said. "We put an emphasis on finishing and so now you're down to the three games and so you put the clutter of the playoffs and all that out of your mind. You focus in on how you take care of the game you can control and that's the one that's taking place this week."
To avenge their loss against the Raiders, Kansas City will need to have running back Jamaal Charles available on their roster. Although Charles is the NFL leader with 14 touchdowns, the Associated Press reported that he missed Wednesday's practice due to knee and ankle injuries.
"It was scary at first," Charles said after spraining his ankle last Sunday. "I thought I tore it up."
ESPN reporters Adam Teicher and Bill Williamson discussed the chances of both the Chiefs and Raiders winning Sunday's game. Williamson noted that the Raiders probably won't remember this season as a positive one.
"The Raiders won a total of eight games the past two years, and they expected to be much better this season after a bunch of changes," Williamson wrote. "Yet the losing has continued. Still, the Raiders can finish on a high note with a couple more wins to make the offseason easier to approach. But Oakland has to find a consistency."
However, Raiders interim coach Tony Sparano thinks that his team can overcome long odds. According to the Associated Press, an example of that resilience can be seen in last Sunday's Raiders win over the San Francisco 49ers 24-13.
"People had us dead and buried last week," Sparano said. "I mean, we were done. It was 52-0, everybody quit. This team is a resilient team. I've said it all along. For some reason or another, nobody wants to listen, but I've been saying it. This is the type of team they are."
Sparano added that the Raiders "need to understand and learn from what happened to us two weeks ago." As part of Oakland's game strategy, he might put rookie Latavius Murray on the field.
"He's real good - fast, explosive, finds the hole real well," Poe said in regards to the Oakland rookie. "We've got to kind of put a hat on him and then try to keep him out of each hole."
