Once Upon A Time has definitely made things interesting for all of its fairy tale characters in Season 4 with the addition of the cast from Disney's Frozen. Episode 8 of this season, "Smash the Mirror", which airs Sunday Nov. 16, is a two-hour episode that will really put all the characters to a grand test.
This season has shown the show's ability to both follow and alter traditional fairy tale history as the characters are trying to take on The Snow Queen. The Snow Queen Ingrid is slightly different than the one from Disney's hit Frozen movie, but more along the source material of the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale. Emma, the daughter of Snow White, has received powers enough to stop the Snow Queen. In fact, it seems like they stopped that Snow Queen until it is revealed that the magic mirror in the bell tower was a fake, and its purpose was to lure Emma to be alone in the police station. Worse yet, Ingrid froze the entrance so she cannot escape.
Coming up to Once Upon a Time is a special two-hour episode called "Smash The Mirror". On this episode, Emma learns that her powers have grown beyond her control, like when she suddenly sends Henry flying into a tree after a fight. The Snow Queen's mirror is going to be heavily featured, and it will definitely affect Storybrooke as well as Anna and Elsa's town of Arendelle.
It is strange to see that Once Upon a Time is doing a two-hour special. Generally, two-hour episodes of one-hour shows are reserved for season finales and premieres. One cannot help if the show intends to go in a very different direction after this episode. After all, most shows have the "pivotal" episode that is often double its length, where everything changes. These episodes can make or break a series.
In the case of "Smash the Mirror", Emma intends on turning to Mr. Gold to help getting her powers under control. Considering that Mr. Gold always gives his "all magic has a price" speech when granting a magical favor, one can't help but wonder what kind of deal he could offer Emma. It is usually the case of a short-term gain and long-term loss. It looks like Hook is going to try and stop this deal, which will undoubtedly upset the balance of his relationship with Emma.
In the meantime, Regina keeps trying to find the author of the Storybrooke storybook. This has been a big question mark since the show's first episode, and it might not end very well.
