Some of you might recall a film in the summer of 2013 known as Pacific Rim, a film by director Guillermo del Toro about giant metallic robots called Jaegers going up against massive monsters from the sea known as Kaiju. The film was a moderate success domestically but made its budget back worldwide. A sequel seemed to be the next logical step, but generally, franchises have their offerings spaced out at most three years apart. That being said, will there actually be a Pacific Rim 2? Director del Toro says: "absolutely".
According to CNET, the famed director of Pan's Labyrinth and the Hellboy series took to Twitter to announce that there will be a Pacific Rim 2, but he will not be directing it (he will produce it, though). Del Toro tweeted: "Met w DeKnight and we are all so happy with our choice to take Pac Rim 2to where we know it can go!!"
The DeKnight that del Toro is tweeting about is Steven S. DeKnight, the executive producer and head writer for the hit Netflix and Marvel show Daredevil. DeKnight has directorial experience as he directed the final episode of Daredevil's Season 1.
So far, there is no word about what will happen in the sequel. Those that saw it remember that the dimensional portal between Earth and the dimension of the Kaijus was completely sealed, effectively ending the war between the Kaiju and Jaegers.
In other words, the film ended with so much closure that a sequel might not be needed. However, the mystery of the Kaiju dimension was never really explored in the first film. It would be interesting to see the dimensional rift be re-opened somehow, and the characters from the first film enter to explore the world of the Kaiju and see their motivations.
As of now, the sequel to Pacific Rim 2 shows up on imdb as Pacific Rim: Maelstrom. There is very little cast is listed, but Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) will probably be back. Also set to return is Hannibal Chau (Ron Perlman). Yes, Ron Perlman is a recurring actor in Guillermo del Toro's films (the title character in both Hellboy movies), and though he was eaten by a young Kaiju in Pacific Rim, a post credits scene showed that Hannibal actually lived.
Pacific Rim 2, or Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, originally had a release date set for August 4, 2017. Considering the grand scale of the first film, it will be difficult for another film of this type to top it. Even if the effects are as good as the first film, the sequel could use a bit more...substance.
