Academy Award-winning Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has been found dead in New York reports the Wall Street Journal.

Hoffman, 46, earned his greatest fame for his Oscar-winning turn in 2005's Capote and his recurring role as Plutarch Heavensbee in the Hunger Gamesfranchise. 

"Philip Seymour Hoffman was a singular talent and one of the most gifted actors of our generation," Lionsgate, which distributes the Hunger Games series, said in a release Sunday. "We're very fortunate that he graced our Hunger Games family. Losing him in his prime is a tragedy, and we send our deepest condolences to Philip's family." 

An official from the New York Police Departmetn said Mr. Hoffman was found dead at his apartment at 35 Bethune St. in the West Village neighbourhood of Manhattan. This is the official police statement on Hoffman's death: 

"On Sunday, February 2, 2014 at approximately 1136 hours police responded to a 911 call for an aided male inside 35 Bethune Street, within the confines of the 6th Precinct. Upon arrival, officers located a 46-year-old male, unconscious and unresponsive, lying on the bathroom floor. EMS also responded and pronounced the male DOA at the scene. An investigation is ongoing by the NYPD. The Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause of death. Family has been notified."

Hoffman is survived by his partner of 15 years, Mimi O'Donnell, and their three children - Cooper, 10, Tallulah 7, and Willa, 5. Hoffman and O'Donnell met while working on the 1999 play In Arabia We'd All Be Kings, which Hoffman directed.  They are not married.

The family released a statement via Hoffman's publicist, Karen Samfilippo: "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers."
