I am too old to have ever been into the show Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, but I remember that the generation before me was.  The show was all over the mid-nineties as a pop culture phenomenon for young children.  Like anything that was ever a sensation ever, there is going to be a reboot, and this is what is known about the Power Rangers movie release date.  A recent still photo has got fans of the original show to wonder how gritty of a reboot this will actually be.

It seems like a lot of the focus for this new Power Rangers film is around Elizabeth Banks.  This actress is known for her glamor queen roles in films like the Pitch Perfect series, as well as her roles in The Lego Movie and Effie in The Hunger Games films.  She is the top-billed star as the villain Rita Repulsa, who was the very Wicked Witch of the West type of villain that was always trying to conquer the world in the original 90's Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers series.

People gave a first look of what the villainess looks like, and it is quite over the top with the reptilian green gown and gold talons.  It is a modern and edgy look, which shows that the reboot of the Power Rangers stands to be pretty gritty of a reboot.

This might not turn out well, as a recent short video by Adi Shankar had an R-rated take on the Power Rangers that was pretty grim, and starred Battlestar Galactica alumni Katee Sackoff.  Many fans of the original show hate this short film, as it has a more dystopian dark science fiction look than the original series ever had.  Many have also liked the short film's ability to take something PG-rated and turn it into some dark R-rated film, with a certain tongue and cheek feel.

The original series, which debuted in 1993, was piecemealed together from Japanese TV shows with added footage filmed in the United States.  The series became an unbridled overnight success and that spawned three seasons, a movie, and several spin-off series after that.  Each series would be renamed every year using costumes, props, and footage from various Super Sentai series from Japan.  During the 90's, the Power Rangers were a toy empire equal to that of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the previous decade.

Power Rangers will appear in theaters on its March 24, 2017, release date.  It will feature Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger, RJ Cyler as the Blue Ranger,  Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger, Becky G as the Yellow Ranger, and Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger.
