Samsung sent out a lot of invites to a big event known as Galaxy Unpacked 2015 taking place on March 1, an event that will take place at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. There is a tease of a phone in profile that has an extremely odd shape for a smartphone. What we are looking at could be the Galaxy S Edge, but also unveiled at this Galaxy Unpacked 2015 event will no doubt be the long-awaited Galaxy S6.
Business Insider reports that Samsung clearly needs to do something very different in order to meet the challenges of other smartphone companies such as Apple and international sales like Xiamoi. These improvements will have to be in two key areas: hardware design and software features. One of the changes, as far as the Galaxy S6 is concerned, is a housing made of both aluminum and glass, very different than the traditional plastics that the Korean giant is used to, according to Boy Genius Report.
We have previously reported on the Galaxy S6 before, and the S6 is said to feature a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display running at 1440 x 2560 resolution, a 1.3 GHz quad-core Cortex processor, 3 GB RAM, 32 GB of storage (expandable to 128 GB), and a whopping 20-megapixel rear camera. Android 5.0 Lollipop is said to come loaded standard with Samsung's TouchWiz UI modification. Available colors are said to include Charcoal Black, Copper Gold, Electric Blue, and Shimmery White. The colors slightly differ from what we heard from GSMArena, as they report that the colors would be dark blue, blue-green, gold, and white.
The while there is a lot of rumors about the specs of the Galaxy S6, not a lot is known about the Galaxy S Edge. This is presumably the curved model that is seen in the invite, as many smartphone accessory companies are revealing cases for the Galaxy S6 that are completely flat. By the way, a new line of cases for the Galaxy S6 is a positive signal that the Galaxy S5 cases will not be compatible.
One has to wonder what is the purpose of having a smartphone with an angle like that. Phonearena has suggested that perhaps this isn't a profile view, but a curved edge similar to that of the Galaxy Note Edge. This phone has a new curved edge screen that has always-on access to email, Internet, apps, notifications, and much more. This keeps the user "free from distractions", as notifications appear on the sloped side rather than at the top, like most Android phones.
If the phone is literally shaped at an S-shape curve like that, I would imagine that it would fit very well in that space between the shoulder and chin where we used to put landline phones. It would certainly make watching videos rather complicated, even though that extra angle might give the phone something to prop it up with.
Unfortunately, we won't know the actual specs of the Galaxy S6 or the Galaxy S Edge until they are formally announced on the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event in March at MWC 2015.
