In Week 15, the Chargers defeated the Broncos in an unexpected 27-20 win. Chargers' quarterback Philip Rivers threw for 4,478 yards and 32 touchdowns at 69.5 completion rate, making him the fifth- and fourth-best in the NFL.

While running back Ryan Matthews rushed for 1,255 yards in the season, San Diego must establish a running game, because the Chargers can't risk getting into a passing match with record-breaking passer Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning.

According to Rick Henne, sports analyst at Chargers.com, the Chargers must improve in their slow-starting games. In their last four wins, they got behind in the beginning and needed to rally with a strong performance to clinch the wins against Broncos, Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals. Should they fall behind again, Henne said, "the team will need to show their resiliency once again, which they've proven capable of doing."

Another key factor to the win in Week 15 was the Chargers' running plays, where Matthews tied his career-high with 29 carries for 127 yards. That day, they totaled 177 rushing yards.

Independent analyst Andrew Mason wrote on Denverbroncos.com that although other offenses were more explosive against the Broncos than San Diego's - Giants and Patriots got more first downs - "no other team converted more third downs and did a better job of playing keep away from the most prolific offense in league history than the Chargers."

They were the only team to possess the football for more than 35 minutes against the Broncos, said Mason. "And did it twice."

The Broncos can expect the Chargers to make similar plays that can make similar damage. If Denver expects to win the game, they must be able to break down the Chargers' offense.
