Although both teams have met just a few weeks ago, the 49ers face a tough challenge against the defending Super Bowl champions after losing to the Oakland Raiders last week 24-13. That's in addition to the uncertain future of 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh; the Associated Press reported that the University of Michigan, his alma mater, reached out to him.
"My priorities are No. 1, winning football games, No. 2, with the welfare of our players, coaches and our staff, and lastly is what my personal and professional future is," Harbaugh said. "My priorities are winning games."
Marlon Maloney of Bleacher Report thinks that San Francisco has missed out on any real opportunity at making the playoffs. Over the last three weeks, the 49ers offense has only scored just 33 points in the process.
Maloney also mentioned that while the 49ers have the second-best road record in the conference at 4-3, their game strategy doesn't seem to work in Seattle.
"San Francisco has not won in Seattle since Dec. 24, 2011," Maloney wrote. "With the way each team's season has gone, the 49ers will be hard-pressed to pull off an upset, but Seattle cannot afford a slip up."
Despite the speculation surrounding the future of Harbaugh, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll thinks that the 49ers are still motivated to play against his team.
"That's why they're so dangerous coming in right now, because of his leadership and his toughness about the way he runs his program," Carroll said. "All the other stuff you guys thought was going on, there ain't much to it. Really, it's two football guys going at it and two guys who love to compete and battle and there's nobody I'd rather play."
In regards to game strategy, the Seahawks would have to figure out to contain 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick again on the gridiron. According to the Associated Press, Kaepernick has three touchdown passes, nine INTs, a 50.6 passer rating a 1-4 record against the Seahawks as a starter.
"Colin Kaepernick had one of the worst games of his career the last time these teams played," Maloney wrote. "Seattle loaded the box up with eight defenders on early downs to stop any form of San Francisco's ground game."
Maloney added that Kaepernick's performance was so poor against Seattle last time that "all 16 of his completions were to targets within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage."
However, 49ers running back Frank Gore told the Associated Press that San Francisco still has confidence in Kaepernick's gameplay, despite the struggles.
"He wants to be great," Gore said. "When things aren't going your way, you carry that on your shoulders. I understand it."
Gore added that Kaepernick has "got our respect in here."
