The SyFy channel has released a teaser trailer for Sharknado 3, and I believe that the actual subtitle is "Oh Hello No!" They pride themselves that the best movies come in threes like Lord of the Rings, The Dark Knight, and The Godfather, and so Sharknado 3 will soon join the ranks of immortal trilogies.
From what it looks like the Sharknado (a tornado filled with sharks) is coming to Washington D.C., as illustrated by a shark that falls on the lap of Lincoln at his memorial. Also, it looks like Mark Cuban, one of the sharks from Shark Tank (get it?), is playing the President of the United States. The preview ends with "Oh Hell Yeah" as characters take on the flying sharks with machine guns.
Yes, this is bad, but it is bad on purpose. If you are not familiar with Sharknado, it was an offering from The Asylum pictures and the Syfy network. If you are not familiar with The Asylum, they have a reputation of creating low-budget, direct-to-video productions that looked like current blockbuster films. For example, they produced their own version of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds in 2005, public domain material meant to piggyback on the success of Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise's film that came out in the summer of that year. That same year, they released Snakes on a Train (rip-off of Snakes on a Plane) and The Da Vinci Treasure (rip-off of The Da Vinci Code).
The list goes on and on, and most of The Asylum films are rip-offs, and some of the titles are practically parodies like Transmorphers (clearly a rip-off of Transformers). They also produced some Christian films with a Faith Films label like The Apocalypse and Sunday School Musical.
In 2013, Syfy and The Asylum combined to create a film that is "so bad, it's good" on purpose, and Sharknado was a great success. Its effects were bad, its premise was completely irrational (sharks cannot breathe in a tornado), the acting was awful, but audiences that love cheese ate it up.
In 2014, they made a sequel simply known as Sharknado 2: The Second One. Seriously, that is the subtitle they went with. In that film, the Sharknado comes to New York (it came to L.A. in the first one) for no reason other than it can. The budget was bigger, and they could afford a lot of cameos.
In Sharknado 3, the cameos are also there as David Hasselhoff will be in it, along with Bo Derek, Frankie Muniz, Kendra Wilkinson, and Erika Jordan who plays a NASA Engineer named Harleen Quinn, and I can't believe that is her character's name. Oh, it looks like Ian Ziering and Tara Reid are back, attempting to stop the Sharknado that they just can escape from.
So when can we be expecting this masterpiece to arrive on the SyFy network? Check it out when Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! arrives on July 22nd, 2015, according to CNET. Enjoy watching sharks fall on our Nation's Capital.
