The upcoming ‘Sons of Anarchy’ spinoff is now officially in the works as the script for the story centered on the Latino race is currently being written.
Series creator Kurt Sutter has worked with Elgin James in coming up with the script for the highly-anticipated spinoff.
The new series will be titled ‘Mayans MC’ and will put the spotlight on the Latino motorcycle club known as The Mayans. As reported by Variety, the upcoming show will highlight darker themes and more drama elements compared to its prequel, all of which will revolve around a Latino point of view.
“Because I didn't think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice,” Sutter explained, pointing towards James’ involvement in a series that has a strong Latino voice.
‘Sons of Anarchy’ star Charlie Hunnam has been rumored to be joining the cast to reprise his role as Jax Teller while Brad Pitt could possible sign on to the spinoff as Jax’s father, although confirmed information on such casting speculations is yet to be announced.
Sutter already took to Instagram and shared a photo which teased that ‘Mayans MC’ is indeed in the works. He also posted an image weeks ago that led to rumors that Jax from ‘Sons of Anarchy’ will return in the form of Hunnam.
The American crime TV series, which was centered on single father Jax and his struggles with his outlaw motorcycle club, has been FX Networks' highest-rated drama show after airing for seven seasons.
In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sutter already mentioned that the ‘Sons of Anarchy’ spinoff could focus on rival biker gang, The Mayans.
“The Mayan thing happened as I was talking to Eric Schrier, one of the FX executives I’ve known since 'The Shield,’” Sutter explained.
"We were talking about the idea of doing things for other markets, like the Spanish-speaking market," he added. "I casually said I’d be open to doing something with the Mayans. It’s the same [biker] subculture, but it’d be interesting to see the influences of that culture and how it impacts the subculture we already understand.”
In addition, the series creator explained that the spinoff’s storyline will end long before the first ‘Sons of Anarchy’ scenarios began. This has left FX viewers asking which of the former actors in ‘Sons of Anarchy’ will be involved in the new series.
However, there have been criticisms aimed towards ‘Mayans MC,’ deeming such move as “highly risky.”
Despite fans of ‘Sons of Anarchy’ anticipating the possible appearance of their favorite characters, such circumstances could come with great risk.
“Don’t get me wrong, Kurt Sutter is good, really good, so it’s not a question of whether or not the show will be good,” news site News for Shoppers stated. “…No matter how meticulous Sutter is, odds are by overlapping the two shows something would get skewed and could compromise SOA’s history.”
