All good things must come to an end, and where the third Star Wars trilogy comes to a close with Star Wars Episode 9 on May 24, 2019, you might want to make sure that you have some tissues or a handkerchief nearby. The shirt sleeve of the person sitting next to you might do as well, although it would work out rather strange if he or she were to be a stranger. According to Star Wars 9 director Colin Trevorrow, the last installment of The Force Awakens trilogy will feature an emotional end, culminating in an "emotionally resonant" note. Trevorrow helming the movie was first announced in August 2015, where the Jurassic World director will see his creative writing and directing give birth to Star Wars 9’s reality. Do take note that Star Wars 8, The Last Jedi, has not been released just yet and many fans are still feeling forlorn over the passing of Carrie Fisher last year. Will the story maintain an edge to it, playing with the strings of the heart while making sure that enough action and lightsaber action is thrown into the mix? Only time will be able to tell.
So far, very little is known about Star Wars 9. Trevorrow himself has been occupied by promoting The Book of Henry, which is his most recent movie, and to have him drop nuggets of information about Star Wars 9 is certainly a pleasant surprise. Trevorrow spent some time with ScreenRant where The Book of Henry is concerned, in addition to opening up about his collaborating with J.J. Abrams, Rian Johnson, and Lucasfilm.
Trevorrow said, “The process of Star Wars began way back in August of 2015 when I looked at what J.J. and Rian had done and I'm very fortunate that I'm surrounded by some really, really brilliant producers and brilliant creative minds, Kiri Hart and the Lucasfilm story group and my producer (Michelle) Rejwan and Kathy Kennedy and also J.J. and Rian, Larry Kasdan. I mean, these are the best minds available and everybody's engaged in making sure this is the most satisfying and emotionally resonant conclusion that we can possibly deliver."
Star Wars 9 is set to be released in 2019, which will be two years after The Last Jedi hits the silver screen later this year. Of course, expectations will always be high when it comes to Star Wars movies, and we can be sure that these movies will be blockbusters that would possibly be able to gross more than a billion dollars worldwide each, but what is more important would be the storyline. Will Trevorrow be able to tie in everything together in a nice manner? Is there room for yet a fourth trilogy, or will it simply be spinoffs of the vast Star Wars universe from now on, just like in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story?
So far, the third Star Wars trilogy has reignited the passion in the franchise’s fans, while gaining a slew of younger fans on board. Media consumption and presentation has definitely changed dramatically over the past few decades, but no one is able to resist a good story. Stories are what makes us, defines us, and this is another reason why movie studios are now scouring book fairs to see whether there are any amazing or obscure titles that could be translated to the silver screen in their search for new ideas.
The most sensitive and challenging part for Trevorrow would most probably be how Carrie Fisher’s role be fleshed out, now that she is no longer with us. Preserving and honoring the memory of such an iconic character and the actress who defined her will certainly be a tightrope that not everyone can walk across, and Trevorrow gives this guarantee, "I can guarantee it will be handled with love and respect, and all of the soul that Carrie Fisher deserves."
