Super Bowl 2016: Coldplay Confirms Halftime Performance; Who Else Will be Performing?

As the New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos and the rest of the NFL teams battle it out in the field, the excitement for the Super Bowl 50 is gaining intensity. While the world awaits who among the teams of Tom Brady, Cam Newton, Aaron Rodgers, Tony Romo, Peyton Manning and other star quarterbacks will make it to the final round, the half-time show of the 2016 Super Bowl is signing notable artists left and right.

The latest addition to the Super Bowl 50 lineup is the band Coldplay. Led by the estranged husband of Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Martin, the band made their announcement via the Pepsi website. Aside from Martin, who also famously dated Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence, Coldplay is also composed of Will Champion, Guy Berryman and Jonny Buckland. The band won seven Grammy Awards in the past.

"We are so excited and honoured and thrilled to be playing the half-time show," shared Martin in the video announcement of Coldplay's participation in Super Bowl 50. The band's frontman further noted, "It's going to be wonderful and I hope we see you there."

Martin went on to share, "This is the greatest moment in our band's life. We are going to give it everything we have."

The Super Bowl 50, which is scheduled on February 7, 2016, will be held in the San Francisco 49ers home court at the Levi's Stadium in the San Francisco Bay Area. The official announcement of Coldplay's stint with the league was made during the football match between the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions.

"This announcement is just the beginning," noted the official press release of the NFL regarding the Super Bowl 50. It added, "Coldplay frontman Chris Martin is designing a show that will echo elements of the NFL's On the Fifty campaign -- honoring the past, recognizing the present and looking ahead to the next 50 years, including other special artists."

Prior to signing Coldplay, the Super Bowl has featured various A-listers in its roster of half-time performers. These artists include the likes of Katy Perry and Bruno Mars. Prince, the Rolling Stones and U2 were also featured in the show at some point. Even Bruce Springsteen, The E Street Band, The Who and the Heartbreakers walked the same stage in the past. As with the tradition of featuring great artists, the Super Bowl also once signed Paul McCartney and Madonna for the show.
