T-Mobile Launches Public Beta of DIGITS Feature, Allowing Same Phone Number Across Devices

T-Mobile has launched a public beta test for its new DIGITS feature that allows customers to call or text using one phone number from multiple devices.  Mike Mozart / Flickr

T-Mobile is making it possible for customers to call and text from one number across multiple devices. Furthermore, they will let you use multiple numbers on one device. The company is rolling out a beta program that will allow the people to test this new feature called DIGITS before it becomes available to the public.

Though the DIGITS feature is not yet officially launched, T-Mobile customers have the chance to try it out before everyone else does. They simply have to register and they will eventually receive an email with further instructions. Though you will not be able to join its beta program unless you have a postpaid T-Mobile account.

According to the USA Today, the feature will enable making calls and sending SMS from multiple devices that you use, as long as there is an Internet connection. For instance, you can use your tablet or laptop to phone someone. On the other hand, your recipient will not notice that you are doing that through a different device other than your smartphone. All that will be displayed is your regular number. It also works the other way. You will be able to receive their call and text to that number on any of your devices.

The DIGITS feature will be available on iOS and Android devices through an app. Though there is a system requirement for these mobile operating systems: at least iOS 9.0 and Android 5.0. Meanwhile, those you are using their PC or laptop, you can access it through your web browsers. Wearables such as the Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch will soon be able to support this feature too. T-Mobile is also working on rolling it out to non-smartphone devices.

You need to go to the company’s website or the downloaded T-Mobile app to be able to adjust the settings of the feature and choose the devices you want to “push calls and texts”. The good thing about this feature can be enabled in Verizon or AT&T phones once the app is installed. If you have forgotten your own phone in your house, you can still use another device. As long as you are connected, you will still enjoy the service even when you are in another country. The carrier is offering free calls using your phone number.

T-Mobile’s Chief Operating Officer Mike Seivert told the USA Today, “What Digits does is it really breaks down this century-long limitation of one phone number per device and one device per phone number.”

Like any other software or feature after the beta phase, T-Mobile will then release it to the public. Though the carrier is yet to give a definite date for when that happens next year.
