Shark fans and those who love the fishes have probably already seen the video footage of Deep Blue, who is the largest great white shark to every be caught on film. Not only is the massive fish a wonder to see, but the existence of a shark this large and this old shows that conversation efforts to save aquatic life is gaining speed.
According to The Huffington Post, this Deep Blue shark is one of the biggest great white sharks ever filmed, according to Mauricio Hoyos Padilla, the director-general of the nonprofit marine research organization Pelagios-Kakunja. She is 20 feet long and wide as a small elephant. Yes, you read it right when I wrote that Deep Blue is a "she". In fact, the reason for her huge girth is due to the fact that she is probably pregnant.
Deep Blue has been making quite a splash on social media when Padilla posted footage of her taken off the western coast of Mexico on his Facebook page. It was not the first time Deep Blue has appeared on his Facebook, and it is essentially a follow-up to a similar video. In fact, the "new" footage is actually a two years old since it was filmed in November 2013, but only recently been shared.
James Ketchum, the director of marine conservation at Pelagios Kakunja believes that Deep Blue gives "hope that protection and conservation efforts seem to be working". A shark that is this large means that "the older the female, the more offspring [she] has produced throughout her life. Deep Blue may have given birth to close to two hundred pups."
According to ABC News, Deep Blue is actually 50 years old and weighs about 5,000 pounds. There is not any repot as to why the video footage of Deep Blue was not shared right away, but it has received 1.6 million views.
The video has been featured on many news outlets, such as Sploid. It shows Deep Blue being so large that it dwarfs the shark cage. There is a scuba diver on the outside of the cage, but it looks like Deep Blue has no interest in this snack.
In case you are wondering if Deep Blue would be a candidate to put on the Discovery Channel's "Shark Week", this might have already happened. Last year, a shark that resembled her appeared on "Jaws Strikes Back", but it hasn't been confirmed whether or not the two sharks are the same. Some say that it is.
I'm sure a lot of fans of Shark Week want to see more of Deep Blue, and since this video was taken in 2013, shouldn't she have raised her 200 offspring by now? I'm guessing it would probably be extremely difficult to get this giant great white mother with her pups on film, unless you have a lot of scuba equipment and shark cages with really narrow bars.
