Valentine's Day 2015 is coming up in less than two weeks, which starts a tradition for a husband to get that valentine card to their wife, and for the boyfriend to give the same thing to their girlfriend. One quick word of advice to any husband and boyfriend out there: you want to be the one who gives, and not the guy that doesn't, trust me. There are all kinds of gifts, including Love Poems, Quotes, and other Card Ideas.
Love Poems
According to a recent article on Nola.com, love poems are an ancient art that have been performed since the 8th century, B.C. Even though it might seem a struggle to write a poem, it is quite simple when you know the other person.
Think of the ending scene in Jerry Maguire, when Tom Cruise just up and tells Renee Zellweger that he loves her, and adds on the now iconic line "you complete me". It is pretty clear that Maguire is not creative, and he stole from an experience that he and Zellweger's respective characters saw in an elevator with a couple doing sign language.
My point is if Jerry Maguire can do it, so can any other man. And yes, since Jerry Maguire was unoriginal, it is okay to "borrow" from other great love poems. If you go to Poem of Quotes right now, you can find the Greatest Love Poetry of All Time with some well-known poet names like William Shakespeare, Robert Browning, and Emily Dickinson.
Love Quotes
Unlike poetry, which you can make up, you might want to deliberately steal a good quote about love that you can put in a card, write on a note, or some other form of romantic presentation. Finding a quote about love over the Internet is as easy as finding a caption under a cat, these are just a few that I found on the Goodreads site that had a lot to say that applies to any kind of relational love:
"A friend is someone who knows all about you and still loves you." -Elbert Hubbard
"Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own." - William Shakespeare
"You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams." -Dr. Seuss
Who would have thought that Dr. Seuss was so romantic? Again, if he can do it, so can you.
Love Cards
Before the age of the Internet, a Valentine was something that was on a card rack on a store, and husbands and boyfriends would pick out whatever one would be the best. Now, you can just go to sites like the Hallmark shop and personalize a card and get it sent where it needs to go.
With all this diversity, picking out the right card for a wife or girlfriend could be as difficult as actually writing an original poem. Sometimes, finding the perfect one just hasn't been made yet, because it truly has to be "from the heart".
In other words, selecting that Love Poem, Love Quote, or Love Card can be difficult, but it has to have a specific target audience of one. Find what the other likes, and attempt to give it. You may not succeed, but you really should try.
