With the immense success of The Walking Dead series on AMC, inspired by the graphic novel series of the same name, a spin-off series was probably inevitable as fans want to see more of the world of walkers. Here is what we know about The Walking Dead Spin-off series cast and premiere date.
It will be set in Los Angeles, as opposed to the Atlanta setting of the original. According to Games Radar, the show will begin before the zombie apocalypse, but it will not be a prequel.
According to Cinema Blend, the show will feature Cliff Curtis as Sean Cabrera, an ex-gym teacher who is in a relationship with a guidance counselor named Miranda. The part of Miranda will be played by Kim Dickens, who is a basic "girl next door with an edge to her", according to The Latino Post. Miranda (some sources call her Nancy) has two children from a previous marriage with a dysfunctional Nick (played by Frank Dillane) and ambitious daughter Ashley (Alycia Debnam Carey). It looks like Sean will have some family members along for the zombie ride with a flower child ex-wife name Andrea, as well as a son named Cody.
The Walking Dead spinoff series was known as the working title Cobalt, according to Screen Rant. There is an imdb site for Fear the Walking Dead, and its cast matches what has been reported as far as the new Walking Dead spin-off is concerned. I'm not certain if Fear the Walking Dead will be the final title. I would say that it sounds like a low-budget horror movie title, but so does The Walking Dead.
At the SXSW festival in Austin, Robert Kirkman, the co-creator of The Walking Dead, had a lot to say about the spin-off. He said that it will not relate to the comics at all, and it won't be necessary to read the comics or watch the original television show in order to understand it. The show will be "standing on its own". Dave Erickson of Sons of Anarchy will produce the series and Adam Davidson has been assigned to direct the pilot episode.
As far as the premiere date for the spin-off series for The Walking Dead is concerned, TV Line says that it will launch a six episode season in late summer. There is no more exact release date than that, but the show has already been green-lit for two seasons.
So what will the plot be of The Walking Dead spin-off series? That is the real question. Considering that it will begin before the zombie apocalypse begins, does this mean that we will actually see how this outbreak will take place?
Personally, I think revealing a scientific cause for the rise of the undead could ruin the show and what Robert Kirkman was trying to do with his comic book series. However, both The Walking Dead TV show and comic book source material start off like the movie 28 Days Later, with a character in a coma suddenly waking up to a world of zombies. It would be interesting to see how this outbreak caused society to fall, which is what The Walking Dead is really about. Let's hope that The Walking Dead spin-off series will take the story to a new level and not just be a cash-in.
