At E3 2016, the big video game convention that occurs annually at the Los Angeles Convention Center, there were many big announcements made. One of the expectations is that there would finally be a preview of the next The Legend of Zelda game for the Wii U as well as the next generation Nintendo NX. There was not an official release date, but there is a subtitle: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Many Zelda fans debate whether or not The Ocarina of Time, the first 3-D Zelda game, was the best, but the graphics quality has not passed the test of time. As for Twilight Princess, the first Zelda game for the original Wii system, there was a lot of fans loving this, and it is my current favorite video game of all time.
Everything that was in the Breath of the Wind trailer was worth seeing, and it has made me wonder if the delay was worth it. In case you don't know, the Wii U was released with a promise of a new Zelda game sometime in 2015, but this didn't happen. Then there were rumors of a new Nintendo system that we now know as the Nintendo NX, and it will be released in March of 2017. It seems like these rumors are true, and it looks like Breath of the Wind will be coming to the Wii U and the Nintendo NX.
In fact, it looks like Nintendo is banking for the company's survival on this franchise. Chances are that Breath of the Wind will be a packaged deal with the NX, and the trailer of the game that you can see below, and so far, it looks like it could be the best of the series.
The trailer seems to emphasize a beautiful world that Link (the hero of the series, who could be given the option of being female in this version) can roam. Many have compared this to The Elder Scrolls series, and the Zelda series has always been a combination of outdoor and indoor action. Much of the playing in a Zelda game happens in dungeons full of traps and monsters, and the trailer showed very little of that.
It looks like Breath of the Wild emphasizes Link in the great outdoors of Hyrule (the world that The Legend of Zelda takes place in). In fact, the title seems to suggest that Link isn't going inside at all.
As for Link's great weapons, it looks like he has a glider which will help him go from the top of cliffs to valleys below. It also looks like there are arrows involved, because Link always uses a bow and arrow at some point.
So there isn't going to be a formal release date yet, but with the NX coming out in March 2017, Breath of the Wind should be out then.
