If you know anything about the upcoming new Season of Daredevil, then you know that Jon Bernthal will be playing The Punisher, a very popular marvel character.  It seems like Netflix is counting on this actor and the writing of Season 2 of Daredevil to really be very popular, as there could be a plan of a Punisher spinoff series.

A report from the Hollywood Reporter states that Netflix is "eyeing a potential stand-alone series" for The Punisher.  Assuming that this particular series gets the green-light, it is one of six Marvel-related series put on by the streaming service. The first being Daredevil, the second was the most recent Jessica JonesJessica Jones introduced the character of Luke Cage, and he will have his own series.  There is also a plan to introduce another Marvel character with Iron Fist, which there isn't really much information about at this time.

Then the plan is similar to Marvel's The Avengers, as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist are planned to meet together in a group for a limited series known as The Defenders.  Perhaps The Punisher could be part of this group, and there could be five people in this super-team.

The Punisher is one of those fan-favorite characters, but he is by no means an ideal superhero like Captain America.  Instead, the Punisher is more of an anti-hero who has a backstory of having his family killed, and then essentially starting a one-man war on crime.  He has no qualms about shooting criminals dead, and he will no doubt clash with Daredevil in Season 2, who never did cross that line in Season 1.

Considering that the Punisher has already had three movies about him, a television show could be interesting, giving a more sympathetic view of the vigilante.  It would definitely be one of Marvel's darker shows, and The Punisher could easily be the next Dexter, an anti-hero who feels driven to kill for the sake of compulsion as well as justice.

Assuming that The Punisher happens, this will be one of several shows that Netflix is putting its $1 billion for new content, producing practically a show a week.  The Punisher would take place within the same Marvel Cinematic Universe established in The Avengers and all of its spinoff characters like Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man.  This universe is also shared within ABC shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter, as well as a new spinoff show known as Marvel's Most Wanted

This potential Punisher series doesn't have any potential release date, but if it were to happen, it would depend on the feedback from Daredevil Season 2, which plans to premiere on Netflix on March 18th. Considering that these series have got some great reviews, Daredevil Season 2 will probably present The Punisher in a great way, and there will be fan demand for The Punisher series.
