Christian evangelist Ray Comfort recently posted his thoughts regarding the domestic abuse case involving Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice on Facebook, reminding readers of God's mercy and of our own sinfulness.
Ray Rice has been indefinitely suspended from the NFL and is facing legal repercussions after a video was released Monday of him knocking his then-fiancé unconscious in an elevator in an Atlantic City casino in February. The running back was originally suspended from two games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy after a video of Rice dragging his wife Janay out of the elevator was released in February. When a video capturing his violence against his wife inside the elevator was made evident Monday, however, Rice was released from the Baltimore Ravens and is suspended indefinitely from the NFL.
"I've made the biggest mistake of my life," Rice has said in a statement regarding the incident - "I take full responsibility for my actions ... what happened that night should have never happened." He and his wife now desire to become ambassadors for domestic violence awareness. "No one knows the pain that the media and unwanted options from the public has caused my family. To make us relive a moment in our lives that we regret every day is a horrible thing ... Just know we will continue to grow and show the world what real love is," Janay posted on Instagram earlier this week.
CNN reports that Rice was charged with a felony, but is avoiding jail time by participating in a New Jersey legal system intervention program.
"Like the woman caught in the act of adultery, Ray Rice is guilty of a serious crime," Christian evangelist Ray Comfort posted on Facebook recently. "He punched a woman. So stones are held high by indignant hands, and anyone who shows the slightest hint of mercy towards him will also catch their wrath. Women should be respected. Never mind that they are used as sex objects by Hollywood, and are shot, raped, and beaten in violent video games. Never mind that millions of female babies have been legally slaughtered in the womb. But lose your temper for a moment on-camera, and you are food for the money-making media ratings machine. Rice will be chewed to milk and spat out in disgust, all in the name of respect for women," he wrote.
Rice's sin against his wife was made horrendously public; we often forget that even if our sin goes unnoticed by others, there is One Who sees it fully - the One to Whom everyone will have to give an account (see Romans 14:10-12 and Matthew 12:36-37). "There's a news flash the media needs to hear: 'For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil' (Eccl. 12:14)," Comfort writes.
"Everything is being recorded and will be judged by Almighty God, and until the log of self-righteousness is removed from our own eye, we will ignore mercy and be quick to cast stones at the sins of others," he says. That mercy was paid for in blood by Jesus Christ so that all who receive His work on their behalf can be made right with God (see Romans 3:10-26).
