With Daredevil becoming such a big hit on Netflix as well as another not of success on Marvel Cinematic universe belt, there can only be one question: what can you possibly do for Daredevil Season 2? Here is the best we know on that subject, including the Cast, Release Date, and other News updates including the rise of the Punisher.
The big news that was announced from Marvel is that Jon Bernthal, an actor best known for his roles on The Wolf of Wall Street, Fury, and TV's The Walking Dead, has been cast as The Punisher. For those who are unaware of this character, he is one of Marvel's most popular superheroes, but he definitely delves into some villain territory.
The Punisher has even had three movies made about him, and he is most famous for his shirt with the skull emblazed on his chest. It is not known if Netflix will use that look, but the Punisher, aka Frank Castle, was a war veteran with a family that was killed, and so he takes revenge on the criminals, by any means necessary. Yes, The Punisher kills his enemies, so I guess that makes him more of an antihero.
According to Jeph Loeb, Marvel's Head of Television, "Castle's appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same". Is Castle going to set the storyline for Season 2? The Punisher has tried to kill the Kingpin several times in the comics.
There are some obvious loose ends from Daredevil Season 1 that were left deliberately untied as plotlines for Season 2. For example, it is pretty obvious that the Kingpin isn't through yet, even though he is in jail. It is possible that he might still continue his empire from prison, or find some lawyer to bail him out.
Also, Karen Page is guilty of murdering Kingpin's best friend and assistant Wesley. Considering that Wilson Fisk has been known to surrender to his darkest side when it comes to grudges, it is obvious that he is going to track down Wesley's killer. This will lead him inevitably to Karen. Considering that Karen Page dies in the Daredevil comic, it is possible that this could happen here.
However, there is a lot in the Daredevil mythos that could be explored for Season 2. SciFiNow reports that Steven DeKnight has talked about Daredevil, saying that he didn't introduce classic Daredevil characters like Elektra and Bullseye this season but they are "on the radar".
Yes, Elektra and Bullseye have been introduced to most audiences as Jennifer Garner and Colin Farrell from the 2003 Daredevil movie version, but in the comics, this story became famous and not infamous. Elektra and Daredevil had a relationship that ended in tragedy when Bullseye killed her, and it affected Matt forever.
Season 2 could introduce Elektra back into Matt's life, because it has been previously mentioned on the show that Matt dated some Greek girl in college. From there, Elektra could become involved with Nelson and Murdock, and it would be interesting to see her interact with Karen, not to mention Claire.
It would be simple for the writers to introduce a hired assassin named Bullseye, and then have him go after Daredevil because the Kingpin hired him for that. In fact, there was a sniper revealed in Season 1 who had some cards with him, and this could be Bullseye. Elektra could get involved after Bullseye guns for Daredevil, and then a tragic history would repeat itself, ending Season 2 on a very dark note of sadness.
Fans of Daredevil might want to rejoice as Marvel has announced that Rosario Dawson is going to return for Season 2. She will be reprising her role as Claire Temple, also known as the Night Nurse. It is not known what her role will be in Season 2, but the fact that she is on the cast list does give suspicion as to what the long term game plan will be for her.
In fact, when Dawson signed up to be in Season 2 of Daredevil, she also signed a larger exclusive TV deal which will allow her to appear in Marvel's other Netflix series. In case you don't know about this deal, Marvel is starting a darker "Netflix-verse" that will consist of four individual shows that will combine to a mini series known as Defenders. In addition to Daredevil being the first character in the super-team, the other characters who will have their own shows are AKA Jessica (coming to Netflix later this year), Luke Cage (coming in 2016), and Iron Fist (TBD).
A recent article from Forbes reveals that the plan is that all shows will have 13 episodes, with The Defenders having 8 of its own. Whether or not there is a long-term plan for these in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has yet to be known. Apart from the teaming with The Defenders, that still leaves what to do with Daredevil Season 2.
Whatever the case, it doesn't look like Daredevil Season 2 will return to Netflix until sometime in 2016.
