While George R.R. Martin’s highly-anticipated “The Winds of Winter” is yet to be officially published, “Game of Thrones” is already moving forward despite the lack of source materials to point out its supposed storylines in the final two seasons. Nonetheless, cast members including Iain Glen say the show is only getting better with the development of “Game of Thrones” season 7.
Glen, who takes on the role of Jorah Mormont on the award-winning series since the first season, opened up to Entertainment Weekly, saying that he has been greatly impressed with the scripts he has read for “Game of Thrones” season 7.
"I wrote to Dan [Weiss] and David [Benioff] and I said I thought they were the best seven episodes they've ever written," he shared.
"The story is going toward a conclusion. There's no sense of treading water. You have story lines colliding. And the evolving drama and relationships are as good as they have ever been. It definitely feels like the beginning of the end game,” the actor added.
Although Glen did not spoil any details on what is set to happen on “Game of Thrones” season 7 and 8, he dropped a clue on what his character’s intentions will be.
After becoming gravely ill, Jorah Mormont was sent away by his Queen, Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke, on a mission to seek a cure for the “stone-man disease” that he has been infected with. As the illness could otherwise take his life away, it is expected that his main objective at present would be to heal and recover from the disease. On the other hand, this would not be the case for his character on “Game of Thrones” season 7.
"My feeling is Jorah would die a happy man if he could get forgiveness from Daenerys,” Glen explained. “He's been in that mental territory half his life. He's always been willing to sacrifices his life for her. His loss of life is not as big for him as seeking her redemption."
While HBO had previously dropped short teasers for the upcoming installment, the official “Game of Thrones” season 7 trailer has just been released.
"The great war is here," Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington, says in the background.
Lasting for about two minutes, the trailer features a range of intense scenes from “Game of Thrones” season 7. While Daenerys lands her ships in Westeros, Cersei (Lena Headey) and Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) could get their hands dirty to keep their family’s legacy alive.
Meanwhile, Jon Snow will finally step in as the King in the North but his sisters are up for some struggles. Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) gets her emotions toyed with by Petyr Baelish aka Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen), while Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) makes her journey across a snowy land. Other characters who are set to return and make special appearances include Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen), Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson), and Melisandre (Carice Van Houten), among others.
While fans look forward to a possible major clash between Daenerys and Cersei, actor Conleth Hill, who plays the cunning Varys, did not drop any spoilers about such conflict. "I really couldn't say," Hill said Newsweek. "And you know very well I couldn't say. But good try."
However, the actor reminded audiences that the characters on "Game of Thrones" remain complex. Many of them cannot be considered as purely wicked or purely good characters, emphasizing Cersei's plans of blowing up the Great Sept in the sixth season. "It's not as easy to be black-and-white about it," Hill added, stating how Jaime Lannister was used to be recognized by fans in a negative light.
The "Game of Thrones" season 7 premiere has been set for July 16, Sunday, at 9/8c on HBO.
