‘Minecraft’ Movie Release Date; What Needs To Happen So It Isn’t ‘The Lego Movie’

It will be three years until the Minecraft movie will be seen.  Mojang

Ever since The Lego Movie was released to theaters back in 2014, it became an unexpected hit for a film that could have easily been written off as a kids' movie.  Almost immediately after its release, another big creation toy/game Minecraft was talked about being made into a movie.  This is what is known about the Minecraft movie with its release date and what needs to happen so it won't look like a Johnny-come-lately version of The Lego Movie

Yes, I said it.  When you are making a movie about a world where individual building blocks can create vast worlds, it is difficult not to compare it to The Lego Movie.   This is like how Dreamworks came out with Antz and Disney came out with A Bug's Life.  Most people preferred the latter, but the former was actually released first.  If you look at these films, they are actually quite different, and the same thing could happen with The Lego Movie and the Minecraft movie, even though they will be constantly be compared.

The thing is, even if the Minecraft movie was just like The Lego Movie, there would not be a lawsuit.  Why?  Well, Warner Brothers Pictures acquired the rights from the live-action Minecraft movie from Mojang last February, and Warner Brother also did The Lego Movie.  Yeah, Warner Brothers isn't going to sue themselves.

The issue is that it is going to be a while before the Minecraft Movie won't be coming for quite a while.  We are talking 2019.  By that time, The Lego Movie Sequel (the official movie title) will be out for a year with its release date of May 18, 2018.  It will be two years after The Lego Batman Movie, which will hit theaters in February 2017.

With the film not coming out for another three years, as its official release date for May 24, 2019, there isn't much known about it.  According to CNET, the film will be directed by Rob McElhenney, the creator and star of the sitcom of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.  Oh hey, wasn't Charlie Day, another cast member of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, in The Lego Movie?  Dang it, I wish I could stop comparing this Minecraft Movie to The Lego Movie, but seriously, I just can't help it.

What is interesting is how the source keeps saying this is a "live-action" Minecraft movie. If that is true, then will these be human characters playing these guys with square head in this 1x1x1 world?  I was thinking that a Minecraft movie would be computer-generated, sort of like what is happening on Minecraft Story Mode.  Well, it is going to take a while before we see what happens.
