The mid-season finale of Scandal left a big question mark on its viewers as Olivia Pope was abducted by parties unknown. Scandal returns this Thursday, and there will be a reckoning to this storyline, but several have speculated that President Fitz and Olivia Pope could finally get together by the end of Season 4.
Inquistir reports that the ending of Season 4 could be very big as President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) might actually do what he has wanted to do since the show began. That would be leaving his wife, First Lady Mellie, and completely devote himself to Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington).
There are certainly those who are rooting for an ending such as this, but for those who are fans of the show, this could easily become a "jump the shark" moment. After all, if Fitz and Olivia have some sort of happy ending, then there wouldn't be much for the show to do, honestly. Unless Fitz and Olivia end up together, and the show goes a completely different direction, which could also make the show "jump the shark" depending on what direction it takes. Also, Olivia is still seeing Jake (Scott Foley), and he would not take to this news very well.
We have previously reported about the show's mid-season finale that Olivia has been abducted by parties that have yet to be revealed. Many suspect that it could be Olivia's own father, Rowan Pope (Joe Morton), who is behind it, even though that seems a little too ruthless, even for him. According to Celebrity Dirty Laundry, most people will put their money on the Vice President and his cohorts. After all, Vice President Andrew Nichols (Jon Tenney) confronted President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) at the end of episode 9, saying: "something precious has been taken from him". Fitz seems to have some kind of breakdown, which means he probably knows that it was Olivia who has been stolen from him.
TV Guide asked Goldwyn if Fitz would go to war for Olivia, implying that perhaps the Vice President has taken Olivia for leverage in order to make the president do a brash, war-mongering, and embarrassing decision in office. Goldwyn responded that there is obviously some right-wing Republican plot to take down Fitz and support Andrew, but he has no idea who is behind Andrew.
Pennlive reports that Season 1 could be coming back in a major way this season, which confirms what we have previously reported before Season 4 began. Scandal's producer Shonda Rhimes told the Hollywood Reporter that "the show will go back to focusing on its core cast after seeing its world greatly expanded as President Fitzgerald Grant ran for re-election and the supporting cast was broadened to help accommodate star Washington, who was pregnant with her first child during Scandal's abbreviated 18-episode run". It would appear that the second half of Season 4 will not be devoted to all the plotlines that are running about, and could be tightened up so the show is somewhat simplified.
