There really isn't much to see on the trailer for the Steve Jobs movie. It focuses on the big man from Apple, as he is about to take the stage, maybe to make an announcement or something. The camera focuses on Steve's back, and there are many voiceovers of quotes from the film like "The musicians play the instruments. I play the orchestra. I sat in a garage and invented the future. When the trailer finally unveils the actor who will be playing Steve Jobs in this film, it is the one and only Michael Fassbender, star of 12 Years a Slave, Inglourious Basterds, Prometheus, and even Magneto in certain X-men films. He has somewhat of a good likeness to the real Steve Jobs, and the film has other great actors as its supporting cast. For example, Seth Rogen will portray Apple's co-creator Steve Wozniak. Kate Winslet plays Joanna Hoffman, one of the original founders of the Macintosh and NeXT team. Jeff Daniels will play former Apple CEO John Sculley.
It is difficult to talk about making a Steve Jobs movie when one has, in fact, already been made. A lot of people criticized Ashton Kutcher's Jobs, where he played Apple CEO, but not all the blame for the failure of that film lies with Kutcher. This film didn't really give much insight into the character of the man, but rather showed how he created Apple. The film also ended just as the iPod and iPhone were about to be released, which removes a significant chunk of the story of Apple's success from the picture.
It is not really known what kind of angle the Steve Jobs film will take, but it is based on the biography by Walter Isaacson. Originally, Steve Jobs was going to be a Sony production with David Fincher set to direct a film based on a screenplay written by Aaron Sorkin. It is pretty clear that Sony expected the lightning to strike twice, as Fincher and Sorkin really made a hit with The Social Network, a film about Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook. It just seemed right to make a film about Steve Jobs and Apple since Jobs did not do the Apple CEO and founder justice as The Social Network did Zuckerberg.
When Sony had that problem with leaked emails, it really showed what a torturous process it was to bring Steve Jobs to film again, according to The Verge. Eventually, the film went from Sony to Universal, and Danny Boyle (director of Slumdog Millionaire) took over.
Steve Jobs will hit theaters on October 9th, 2015. If it works, then both Hollywood and Apple can sit back and be satisfied that someone finally made a definitive film on the Apple founder. If not, then I wouldn't be surprised if another one comes out. After all, Jobs is barely two years old and it is already being remade. At this point, Steve Jobs is becoming a franchise that is being constantly rebooted like Marvel's Hulk and Spider-man.
